Reminds me of a time I was with my my brother who got pulled over. He had cruise control set for the exact speed limit. Cop was following cars going other direction. After going by he flips around and pulls us over. My brother asked, “what did you stop me for?” Cop says “ if I tell you that I’ll have to give you a ticket”.
Just wanted to check out a couple young kids, that’s all it was. Totally illegal stop.
I've been stopped by police 6 times in my life.
- 60 in a 55 zone - got a ticket. It was during a police action in Michigan when they were fighting for raises and ticketed everyone for everything, spitting on the sidewalk kind of stuff. I paid it.
- 60 in a 40 zone. I was going 120 on my drag bike, saw the cop coming and laid on the brakes. Got off lucky.
- Headlight out on pickup truck. Told the cop I was fishing at a farmer's pond, backed down a hill to retrieve my boat, hit a bump and the rusted battery tray gave way and the battery fell forward and broke the connector off of the back of the sealed beam. I still had the boat in the back of the bed. He told me to get it fixed, and to move my license plate from the back window to the bumper mount where it belonged, and suggested I get rid of that rusty old truck. No ticket. Nice guy.
- Pulled over for excessive lane changing. Speed limit was 35. I was going 35. Everyone else was going 25. I was just moving through traffic, using my signals. Cop asked if I was in a hurry or always drove like that. I told him, no, I wasn't in a hurry. I was taking my kids to pick up my wife and we had another 20 minutes to go about 1/4 mile, and yes, I always drive like that. He told me to be more patient and try to be a better driver. No ticket.
- Pulled over for right turn on red with a sign posted no turn on red. No cars anywhere but an airport cop sitting in a parking lot up the block. He turned on his lights before I got to him, so I stopped before him. That ticked him off, as he started flapping his arms to get me to drive past him so he could pull behind me. I wouldn't move the car. So he had to drive across the lanes, go around past me, turn around, and come back behind me. He came up and started cussing at me. I asked him to watch his language around my wife and kids. No ticket.
- Pulled over for running a red light. Very late at night. No cars anywhere. Moving along on the highway at 60mph and the light changed. I was already in the solid white lines, my wife was very pregnant, I didn't want to slam the brakes since the seat belt was under her belly, plus I was pretty sure I'd have to lock the brakes to stop before the intersection, so I just maintained my speed. The light turned red after I crossed into the intersection. One of those probably could have stopped, but might have not maintained control if I did situations. State cop was sitting in State Police Post parking lot on other side of intersection with his lights off. Pulled me over. Told me I ran the light. I told him it was close, but I think I made it, and, told him about not wanting to injure my pregnant wife. He looked in, saw I wasn't lying, checked my license, came back and said might want to slow down approaching intersections and have a nice evening. No ticket.
So, every time I've been pulled over, it was a valid reason. Only once was the cop a jerk. The rest were polite and professional.
