Great lake boats, a good video

Interesting that the self unloader is at the bow end and not the stern end in front of the pilot house. Kind of looks to me like it blocks the view from the pilot house a bit.
Imo, it's easier to bow in to smaller inlets, especially if your dock or wharf section is limited also you can probably get the bow in shallower draft areas leaving the stern in deeper water and not worry about damaging the wheels. I've watched a few freighters up close in close quarters manuvering they always had crew with radios in the blind spots I assume to relay what they see to the bridge.

Actually depends who you talk to/ know if you were on a workboat some still call the propellers wheels.

Same with a part of cabin on boats some call it a salon others call it a saloon which is the traditional name.

One thing that I've always been curious about and that is, under power some emit diesel smoke, some emit what appears to be heated water vapor and some emit nothing. Always wondered about that. I presume that some of them are running diesel oxidation catalysts which explains the visible (steam / water vapor) but what about the rest?
Many of the boats have exhaust scrubbers that use water, but others don't or used another system that's not water based. Someone with more knowledge than me will hopefully chime in.

Very curious about that. Some smoke, some don't and some make what looks like water vapor.

Nice news clip about the new 600+ Mark Barker boat which just went to work. 1st boat built here in 40 years and sports a flat cargo hold and carries skid steer and payloads to move the remaining commodity out of its hold.

The Mark Barker pulling into Duluth today loaded with road salt. Got to hear the horn!

She is powered by twin EMD main engines generating 8,000 total horsepower that turn a single four-blade, controllable-pitch propeller through a Lufkin twin-input, single-output gearbox. She has 1,000-hp Kongsberg bow and stern thrusters.

Kind of stubby compared to the 1000 footers.
The Mark Barker (a river-class vessel) was specifically designed and equipped to navigate the tight bends of the Cuyahoga River in Cleveland, Ohio.

All of the Interlake boats have exhaust scrubbers.

"Here’s how the systems work: Exhaust gas from the engine is sent through a series of absorption sprays that “wash” and remove impurities, specifically sulfur and particulate matter. That washed exhaust gas then travels through a droplet separator before a signature clean plume of white steam is discharged into the atmosphere."

It is amazing how efficient, profitable, and environmentally friendly a company can be when they remain a private company.

So, what becomes of the water that is used to strip the exhaust gases? Dumped overboard perhaps?

Far as negotiating the Cuyahoga, all the boats can, they just need assistance from a tug or 2. I grew up in physical sight of the Cuyahoga in Cleveland and to this day I still watch the boats go up the river when I'm in the flats. The shorter boat eliminates the added expense of an assist tug or 2. All economics and nothing more.

I worked for many years at GW industries (now defunct) on Carter road as a fitter and all I did was work on lakes boats. Worked on the Fitz too. She was an inherent leaker.

There is another boat designed to go up the Cuyahoga river and I can't recall which. Is it the Joseph Block? Here is a boat as he backs out that river. Who needs thrusters?? 😅 (the stern thurster engines exhast is seen in this vidoe on the right side)

On the way to work this morning, caught this fellow in the canal and getting ready to tie up. Sorry I couldn't get up the bluff for better pic. What boat might this be? :p He's 600 some feet long.
