As others have said, might just be someone practicing.

Next time you hear it, as others have said, just go to

and find your area. If the plane is squawking a code, it'll show up and should show you some info.

I checked out that website, and it works pretty slick, even on my phone. It will be interesting to see if my local traffic shows up.

Want to get a picture of your package..lol

Sure it's not an ultralight? we have them around here constantly.

It's not an ultralight. I have seen them on very rare occasions. This looks like a normal small airplane.

Yep. I use it on my phone often. Sometimes on cloudy days I'll hear 'odd sounding' aircraft and pull up that website. I've found old WWII planes, piston freighters, military aircraft (sometimes), the Goodyear Blimp! :p

Give it a try and see how you like it. (y)

We regularly have a low flying prop plane fly over checking the oil pipeline at the corner of our 33 acres.

Most likely is that you have a spot that's an ideal emergency landing site in a practice area that instructors use. That would explain the recurrence. I might be wrong, but I think flight aware only tracks a/c that have ADS-B out.

Can you get a picture of it, and post it on here ? Does it have any ID numbers and letters on the bottom of the wings ?

if there just by flying visual flight rules, and practicing, your not going to find it on flight aware.

I tried it today as my mother has been wondering why there are so many contrails overhead recently… sometimes as many as 5 at a time. The app showed no jets within a couple of hundred miles. Does that mean they are actually Chemtrails? 🤔🤪😁🦨

How far away can a jet be, and still leave his skat behind?

Well, for starters, many military planes won't be on that site. However, you also need to be zoomed in enough that the "declutter" feature is off. When I looked just now at a zoom level to show all of Maine, (N/S) including a lot of other areas (E/W), there were 1432 flights that had been "decluttered".

In general, to answer your question, contrails dissipate pretty quickly as the upper layers of the atmosphere are relatively dry. Most are gone in a few minutes, less if the air is dry or the upper atmosphere winds are high speed. So, aircraft have to be close.

Now there happens to be a hurricane in the North Atlantic at the moment, and it is possible that more flights are, or were, being diverted somewhat farther north into "your mother's airspace".

All the best,

Peter

My phone camera is not high end, so I could probably get a bigfoot-quality blurry picture at best. It also is not a regular occurrence.

Flight instructors started using my place as a visual placemarker, because it a Dome House and easily distiguishable from the air. I called up the local airport, found the school and politely asked that they stop the fly overs. Which they did.

Many years ago - out on the far reaches of my property. Checking fence line and scouting for coyotes. A single engine plane, all light blue in color, buzzed me three time. Getting closer each time.

I stood up - raised up my rifle - it has never come back.

I was out working one day years ago and was sitting on a stump eating lunch when a helicopter flew over low and started circling... Border Patrol. (I was only a couple of miles from Canada. It was annoying but I waved at them and continued eating my lunch, after a few minutes they flew off. I headed off on snowshoes again and a few minutes later heard them coming back. By that time I was a bit POed so I hid under the trees. I was wearing my florescent orange cruising vest and had they followed my snowshoe tracks they would have seen my ATV with tracks to my truck, so I don't know what that was all about.

Not flight aware, because there's no flight plan. But a good chance they'll be on flightradar24 if they have a transponder turned on.

Purdue University has a pretty big flight program. There are usually planes flying around West Lafayette day and night, and most of them always show up on flightradar24.

In the evenings you can usually find 3-4 of their planes doing cross country flights around Ft. Wayne, South Bend, and back. All over northern Indiana. 683142CA-D37E-44C7-ABD8-5EC33F40710D.jpeg

Like this from about 5 minutes ago.
There are at least 4 planes from Purdue on that map right now.
If you click on most of them, they have no flight plan. Just Lafayette to N/A.

However, this one has a flight plan that says Lafayette to Cincinnati, which I don't know why, because hey, that's Lafayette to South Bend to Ft Wayne to Lafayette! 🙃

Maine looks pretty busy tonight.
