I started wearing mine when in the course of about a month in '81 my sister and her husband got in a wreck in a Toyota Tercel. My sister had her seat belt on and got a nice 2" wide bruise across her chest. My brother in-law wasn't wearing his and he broke out the windshield with his head. A couple weeks later, I got distracted and rear-ended a mid 70's Chevy big boat car in an exact same year/model of Toyota Tercel. I was still in 1st gear, and my head hit the roof and windshield knocked me goofy. Saw stars. Creamed both front fenders, grill, hood, bumper and radiator (chevy was fine). After that, I've always worn one.I've worn mine most of the time since 1981, when I was in a junkyard and saw what a person's shoulder can do to the heavy steel door of a '70s vintage pickup.
I have never supported the law mandating them.
As for laws for seats belts, I wish there wasn't a law and everyone had common sense as well. However, they don't. And 1st responders have to scrape them off the pavement or pull them out of the trees. If they live, and don't have good insurance, they become dependent on tax dollars if they are permanently disabled. So for me, it's completely selfish, in that I don't want my tax dollars caring for someone that made a bad choice, but I don't want to throw them in the dumpster either.
