Good catch. I'll need to check that out ASAP. There is something funny going on there, even though I used it after taking the pictures without any issues.

The pins do need to be replaced eventually. Mine wore out about 1/3 of the diameter of the pin in about 300 to 320 hours of use. Knowing myself, I'll probably fill it with weld and run it some more.

It really shows that with any type of implement, it's important to do a walk around and taking a closer look at stuff like this every once in a while.

I checked a older picture from when the cutter was newer and you can see both pins.

It will be interesting what you find. There is definitely a difference between the old picture and the current one.

Retaining bolt loose/missing is my bet

D&D called it. For some reason the retaining bolt backed out.

The chain wasn't actually ready come out flying by any means. The centrifugal force along with the groove that wears on the pin pretty much makes it a fail safe system.

Looks like you may have caught it just in time.

It seems most of the rest of the world uses cutters with chains instead of blades, and large skids instead of a tail wheel.

Are those retainers normally available as a wear item?

The pins or the bolts? The bolts are just regular M8 bolts. The pins, I'm sure it can be sourced from the manufacturer or a dealer. Never bothered to check the availability since I can easily machine new ones in house.

FYI - I'm getting the frontal iron curtain on the old BH. Couldn't find anything affordable.
You would not believe what they want for a chain guard. (eyes roll).
I had to find some back room forgotten (cheap) parts and I've started cutting and piecing this together. It's not pretty but nothing about this mower is - lol. Plus it's an experiment... But I can always buy some blades if it don't work out. Pray for rain. 3 new fires around us tonight...
Hope I get some pics tomorrow - definitely by Saturday.

Saturday AM brought cloud cover and 10º cooler temps which made working in the barn more tolerable. I got the side skids and front curtain fitted and tacked in place.

If you keep adding new parts, pretty soon you will have a new cutter.
Right? She's built tough... This old farm stuff was built right so she will last somebody a long time.
I will have to fix the gearbox seal/gasket too. Leaking like a sieve. We extended the rear wheel mount so the wheel spins around when you back up. It was originally built for forward travel only.

I am confident the brush will just fall over on its own once the brush sees it.

Progress. :) No pictures :(
Finished welding the chain guard on. Put new zerks in the u-joints and gave them the grease they have been waiting yrs for.
I need to flip it over and finish welding up the underside. Then aside from a leaking differential gasket
I'm nearly done + ready to rock and roll
Praying for rain so I can cut without high fire danger... no rain here in 100 days

Depending on what part of Calif you are in, that rain issue may be solved quickly! Looking forward to seeing it.

Me too. No rain the last 3.5 months. Raining east of me all day.

So yes. We got some rain. 2-4 inches depending.
Yesterday I P-washed the gear box and located the oil leak...
Today I brought it back into the shop and put it on the horses to fix.

Got a couple of pictures. Bad gasket where the shaft bolts to the housing... the good news is the gears show little wear after all these years (y)
I cleaned everything up... ran down to O Riley's and got some RTV gasket material. She should be good to go in the AM.
Shame about the oil spill screwing up the metal for painting... any way - I am looking for a spot to mow.

Ugh! New problem now is RTV gasket is just too thin. Gear lash or clearance is too small - she is binding. I'm going to have to get some gasket material and try again. the simplest things get complicated sometimes.
Need to maintain the OEM thickness.

The gears look the same size on the pictures, is that true? Do you know the ratio of the gearbox?
