This sounds somewhat reasonable.

50% to 200% more expensive, is really all it means to me. :p

I’m also somewhat dubious of the claim, when I see it printed on things like Twinkies.

Picked up at the food terminal/distributor. Stickers taken off and put in crates to pass as locally grown. Price marked up 2-500%

I'll give them a 50 mile radius of their point of sale. Any further away begins to get into false advertising.

More than 50 miles, the soil, terrain, and weather can make a difference.

What it means to me depends on what store I am in when I see it.
There are some locally owned groceries in my area. When they put up a sign on produce that says locally grown you can more than likely drive to the place it was grown in 30 minutes or less. One of these places even posts the name of the person that grew it and/or town it was grown in.
If I go into a chain store then I ignore the sign, it is meaningless, just like the cholesterol free sign hanging over the bananas.

edit: well, the cholesterol free sign in not meaningless, they are, it's just stupid.

Some twinkies are made in Emporia Kansas.
That's over 1,000 miles from Philly.
And are they really made since they are not baked

If they don't list which farm in the area, I am highly suspect that it is locally grown.
We do have some restaurants that list where the products came from, but most , who knows.

Since country of origin marking is not in the law anymore, who knows where anything not marked comes from.

Depends on the chain. Back in the 90s I worked p/t in the produce dept. of a chain supermarket (Hannaford) when I was between careers. The store managers had some discretion as to where to get their produce, and we used to get a lot from relatively local farms...tomatoes, corn, cukes, etc. All of them within 25-30 miles. The regional managers did ask that stores within a given district use the same suppliers for consistency between stores (and no doubt better pricing). In most cases we'd have signs stating where it was from. The one exception was corn from one particular farm...he charged more at his farmstand than we did for the same corn, so he didn't want customers to know we were undercutting him on his own product. We did not jack up the prices...it was the same as if it had come from our warehouse.

Our main competition, Shaws did not have that flexibility...they had to take what the warehouse sent, and a lot of their "local" produce came from N.J or Conn. We'd kind of poke fun at them on the announcements on the PA system.

I'll give them a 50 mile radius of their point of sale. Any further away begins to get into false advertising.
Yeah, that sounds about right.

Locally grown means - Ea WA state or Idaho. I don't think we have any "locally grown" bananas here - any time of the year.

In grocery stores, I presume locally grown to be within a hundred miles or so.
For a road side farm market, I expect the produce to be grown on site or a nearby farm. A farm market next to me sells stuff from at least one state away as "local". He does pick out some nice produce and other products though!

That makes complete sense. We have strawberry vendors who sell right out of the fields where they pick them.

We have a good bit of that, around here. Most often buying it off a wagon at the end of the farmer’s driveway, usually run by one of his kids, or honor system cash box.

That’s the only “locally grown” I’m usually willing to pay extra for.

Neighbor has an "honor" vegetable box. Works well.

My father did that with the greenhouse for years. There was a slot in the door where you slid your money. Actually, he just raised a pane of glass in the old single pane door a bit.

Tasmania is an island and a State, so anything else is not 'local'.

Bananas come from North N.S.W. or Queensland. :)

Local for us is we grew it in our garden or greenhouse.

I love the "local" honey sellers who take their bees to Florida and California, and sell honey sticks they buy online 🤣
