Worst oil change ever

My friend bought a new Dodge Ram crew cab with the 8' box.
Long beast and a pain in the a-s to park.
When he bought it he had a deal where he got free oil changes for the life of the original warranty.
The kid at the dealership who brought it into the shop made too sharp a turn and creased the box from front to back on the post outside that protects the door frames of the building.
After much yelling and screaming and legal threats he got a new box.
I'm not sure they'd be any better but he drives a Ford now. He gets a new truck every 2-3 years and makes sure to show the Dodge dealer principal each sale they lost.

I was always Ford. Got two dealers in city I live close to. One pee's me off I start going to other. Then they do the same. Then I buy a different brand. Then I go back to Ford and start process over again, LOL

That is what is referred to as a normal DIY oil change.
FYI, do yourself a favor, get a metal drain pan, I refuse to use plastic pans, they are an invitation to spills.

The plastic pans with a spout are pretty easy to pour back into the used jugs. I’ve never seen a metal pan with a spout.

I coordinate with numerous neighbours and a large truck come out and empty's all the used oil containers in the neighborhood. He'll come for 2-3000 liters. The last time he was out he had to come twice. His truck doesn't hold 21000 liters.

I have both, and honestly, my favorite is a double-walled plastic with spout and vent:

Of course, we're all working under different conditions. I like this one, because it's very easy to pour the used oil back into the 5-quart bottles I buy it in, or into the 5 gallon gas can I also use for used oil.

Have one that looks just like that. After oil change pour it in a 5 gallon bucket and take it to parts store when I get 10 gallon.

I went to change the oil on my wife’s Genesis. It holds 9 quarts so I got my large plastic pan which holds 15+ quarts. Got the car up on the ramps, put the pan under and pulled the plug. All is well so far.

I crawl back under to put the plug back in after10 minutes or so and see about a quart of oil under the pan. Oh crap! THERE IS A CRACK IN THE BOTTOM OF THE PAN.

I go and get a piece of cardboard to slip under the pan so I don’t spread the oil out more than already done. Slide the pan out on the cardboard and realize there is no way to carry the pan with 8 quarts of oil plus hold the cardboard under it outside to the waste can.

OK, I’ll bring the waste can in, put it on the cardboard and pour the oil in.

Put the funnel in the can and start pouring. I get about half the oil in the can and THE FUNNEL FALLS OUT with about a half a quart of oil in it. Hits the floor and splashes oil 10’ in every direction. Oh crap 2!

I go to get the oil dry and find that I don’t have any, just have floor sweeping compound. I spread that around and it helps a little but not like oil dry.

Of course anything within 10’ is splashed with oil and will need to be cleaned separately.

Shoulda stood in bed this morning.

Mechanic clean shop dark arts: drop some mineral spirits onto that mess and scrub it in with a stiff shop broom and allow it to dry as best as it can. Then hose it off until it stops beading into a drain. Your floor will look brand new.

I posted a thread ~ 2 years ago when my tractor blew a hydraulic line on a freshly paved asphalt driveway (figures). It left a 150’ long x 1’ wide stain.
I put kitty litter on the stream of hydraulic fluid, removed the KL that soaked up oil, and kept adding more fresh KL every few weeks. I also pulverized the KL into a finer dust with a stiff broom with each application.
2 years later and the stain has completely disappeared.

I am routinely amazed the way it can continue to suck oil out of pavement or asphalt, long after you think that stain is dry and set, especially when a second or third application is made and ground into the surface by tire or foot traffic.

But it does have its limits, as some minor discoloration sometimes remains on concrete, and it's terrible PITA to use outdoors if it's raining a few days each week.

Yes, it really is an “old school” solution that continues to work great.

I was lucky that mine occurred on dark asphalt. The stain really is gone, but while waiting for it to disappear, it blended in pretty well. Light colored concrete is a bi@tch for oil stains.
The trick for making kitty litter work really good is to pulverize it into a powder.

Trucks have a great resale.
I don't think any of his have been on the market more than a week. Even though they have some mileage they are almost new by model year. He always gets them when they first come out. So his 2025 got delivered in 2024.
He gets top dollar.
Has to do zero maintenance since just aboot everything is under warranty.
Gas it up, turn the key and go to work.
Gets a tax write off for something he uses for a lot of personal adventures.
And his BIL works for Ford so he begins with an employee discount.
He figures he's actually making a buck to drive new.
Unlike those that insist on driving old wrecks that need constant attention.

I had the crack in the catch pan happen to me. I was under the vehicle, flat on my back checking other components when I felt my t shirt become soaked with oil. It was a mess with the shirt ending up in the burn barrel and probably twenty pounds of kitty litter spread on the concrete for a few days. All is well and there isn't a sign that it ever happened.

All these are really impediments and annoying. But to meet the criteria for bad would be for something to go wrong on the oil pan side, like forgetting to tighten the oil plug and ruin an engine. That would be really bad. And sad

About a week or so back, I bought an inexpensive fluid transfer pump for situations like that--and other things in which I dump oil on floors! It has already saved me a few problems.

BTW, I have used SimpleGreen as a degreaser on my concrete floor. It works pretty well if the spill has been picked up quickly.

I've had decent luck with simple green and a pressure washer. Sorry for your headache OP, but it was entertaining to read! I hate to take any kind of pleasure in your misfortune, but we have to laugh at ourselves right?

Yes I've done the same thing with my Harley but only one quart before I realized I hadn't put the plug back in. I chalked it up to flushing out the crankcase.

That is not how you want to start the day off. I have had my oil drain pan do that once. Now my pan is a softer flexible plastic that doesn't crack. The clean up is the worst part of any spill.

I installed a Fumoto valve. I put a short piece of tubing on it and drain it right back into old gallon oil jugs I've saved from previous changes.

Now the only mess maker is that the filter is at a slight angle and it's hard to catch the oil that leaks out when unscrewing it. I've tried punching a hole in the filter to drain that way but it was not really any better for me.

Try using a McDonalds cup over the filter to catch the oil.

Well if it makes you feel any better, when I had my brand new VW for the wife, took it to the dealer I bought from for an oil change and they put the hoist through the floor. Went through plastic belly pan and the metal floor. Only the carpet never ripped through.
They then blamed my wife saying she ran something over. They nor VW did ever come good for it. Cost me $1100 at a body shop.
