Advice on building a tractor shed?

10' x20' is $2,500 in Southern ON Canada.
Carports here are over $3,500USD.

Why get a carport that has only a top, get a shipping container with all sides and a strong floor!

Have you ever tried to get out of a car in a container? The widest I've seen is 8.5 feet.

LOL, no and I would never put a car in there. A tractor, for sure will fit.

I keep my 1838 Bantam in a 8’ wide enclosed trailer full time but it’s small in size…

If my wife gives the green light to build our third metal garage on our property, I am considering a garage to store my tractor, tractor attachments (7 in total), my Jeep Wrangler YJ, a chipper shredder, push weed trimmer, cement mixer, you get the hint. I have way too much stuff. The garage would be a 24 x 35 with a covered entry. A front 10x10 garage door and a 10x8 side garage door. On the right side of the garage there will be a 35x12 lean to carport to park my flatbed trailer. I am considering raising the height in order to also store our 20' camper. This one would be sitting on gravel unlike the two other garages and powered by solar panels for lights, a few outlets for charging batteries and tool use. The other two garages are used for parking, storage, gym with a traditional sauna and woodworking shop. This time I will position the new garage away from the house and two other garages, so it doesn't look too crowded. I wish I could have had the 2,000 sq ft garage space under one roof but our land does not have that many flat areas, so I had to spread the buildings.

What do you all think about this garage plan? On the plan I more used 2D images of vehicle sized accordingly to what is going to be parked inside. The tractor with the land plane and the Jeep. The shapes spread out inside represent attachments.

Bigger is better, I guarantee it. Size matters.

In 2008 I built a 50 by 90 steel building, 4,500 square feet, clear span.

Figured I wasn't going to do this again, might as well do it right the first time and be done with it.

Forgot all about Murphy's Third Corollary - stuff expands to fill the space allotted to it.

Dang thing is FULL . . .
- Dear Bride always knows where to find me, and I'm OK+ with that.

Very glad I did it, it has been endlessly useful. It also makes a good place to park our cars during a hurricane, it is rated at 160 mph and we are not close to the coast. Hurricane shutters in there, too, when not needed (which is most of the time).

Don't be afraid to build it BIG and build it WELL - you won't regret it.

Best Regards,

Mike/Florida
Nice building, but "not close to the coast" when you live in Florida doesn't matter! If you get in the direct path of a hurricane and you live in Florida, the tornadoes and flood waters will find you!
I get "flood waters" from a hard thunderstorm because my soil doesn't percolate well but it never gets deeper than a puddle because I am uphill from a large amount of property. The wind is my concern because both house and shop are two story buildings, which gives the wind a big side to push on.
I like your Murphy's 3rd Corollary, definitely applies here!

Well now that I have my new baby, I need to build a house for it. I'm thinking a pole style structure (but I cant find any poles, so I'll just use pressure treated posts. I'm also going to house my golf cart and riding mower in it as well. So I'm thinking 20 ft wide x 14 ft deep, using 9 poles (3 rows of 3). Shelves in the back for parts, oil, tools, etc..... Some kind of cover on the 3 side walls up to maybe 5-6 ft high....?

Can't decide yet whether to have a shed roof or gable....as I kinda have to place it, it will be facing more or less West and that is where the weather comes from (generally). But here in northern Arizona, we have not that much rain (15" yr) and it only snows a couple times a year, so I really just want to get these machines out of the direct weather and sun.

Thinking of running a couple of beams across at top plate level to hang/lift stuff from...?

All ideas welcome...I'm thinking you guys have done this before.... :)

Disclosure: I am a long time builder so don't need any construction advice (necessarily), just looking for tips and tricks
I haven't read past the beginning, so

First I would go min 16x24; with some over hangs. 14 ft just isn't much coverage. I would really consider 10 ft clear height.
