BX24 blowing hydraulic filters

So we changed pressure relief value and started with no shims....got it to 1500 psi and it blew the filter. It absolutely destroyed the inside of last filter. We will check screen and change coupler that was unplugged from backhoe and connected back into system. Not sure what you mean by charge pump loop? We will also check priority flow control. We did this same hookup last summer with no issues. We will change coupler today. Five Kubota filters later........
I am having the same problem with my BX 2230. If you figure it out please let me know. I am trying to avoid taking it in $$$$. Been working on it since June. Had it goin for 2 weeks until it blew the forth filter.

Suki,

The OP seems to have dropped this issue. I still have the question I asked the OP up stream:

"Could you please enlighten me as to exactly what is going on with the filters. You start out saying they are blown and then later talk about them being blown up internally. How do they blow up. Do they start leaking, where? From the gasket, the crimped seam, or a split in the side? How can you tell they are blown up internally? All I can see on a filter are the holes the fluid goes through, are you splitting them open? Some pictures would be nice.

To be clear, I do believe there is something going on, and I am not intending to belittle or troll you. I am just hung up and can't get past the failure mode. I have a BX 24, so I am learning a lot from this thread.

Is there any new info on this? I have a similar problem on my bx1500. it is blowing out the filter at idle, right at startup. I was moving dirt and all of a sudden it happened and I have tried cleaning the pressure relief valve and the charge valve, but have had no luck. it happens instantly after starting within 5 seconds.

Is this the factory mounted filter on front of transaxle that is blowing? I presume by blowing up is that oil is pouring out onto the ground.

If yes and if my memory is correct that filters charge oil going into the HST transmission. The charge oil comes from a priority flow control through steering to the filter. If blowing instantly at startup something if preventing flow from going through the charge relief. I would start by obtaining the instructions on how to remove and inspect that relief. I am 99% certain they are in the work shop manual.

The charge relief valve is located between the filter and the PTO shaft. Look up. There are three plugs facing down. The charge relief valve is the center plug with the hex head. The other two socket head plugs are for checking forward/reverse high pressure relief setting. The charge pressure test port is located at the base of the filter. It is the higher of the two plugs. Charge pressure should be 42.7-71.1 psi at 122 oil temp. This all comes from the BX22 WSM. I have no experience with checking or adjusting. The manual is pretty vague in my opinion. No setting or servicing info.

Does the work shop manual have a decent hydraulic schematic. I think yes but is has Been 10 years since I owned a BX and can’t remember for sure.

If yes is it something you can post? Just would like to confirm what item or items could cause the sudden pressure increase in the charge circuit since relief valves typically fail open and lose pressure vs gaining pressure.

Best I could do is take pictures and attach.

Thanks K

Those diagrams kind of confirm that if flow does not get to or through the charge relief the filter would see excessive pressure.

Jyvas,
Did steering or implements functions stop working or change speed before the filters failed?

I would not try operating the tractor until you feel confident the problem is resolved or you may damage something else from the excess pressure.

If it were mine, I would clean the relief and make sure the "spool" slides freely in the bore. Might even be tempted to bump the starter to flush a little oil out. Reassemble and give it a try. If I wanted to test the pressure, I would rig hose to the test port, to a tee with a pressure gauge and a ball valve so I could block the flow. I would start the tractor with the valve mostly open and then close it down watching the gauge. If it rises over the 71 psi as the valve is closed you would know there is still a problem.

A note of caution: Running hydrostatic trans without charge flow for any period of time will potentially damage the hydrostatic pump. It relies on the charge pressure for hydro-dynamic lubrication for rotating group when in neutral.
