Good idea! Buy your tractor in the lower 48, and then take it with you to AK. You will have a MUCH WIDER selection of used tractors in the lower 48, and at much better prices.

Mike describes how to "angle" a box blade. IMPOSSIBLE! Common box blades cannot be angled! Common box blades can ONLY be tilted! For that reason, a rear scrape blade is by far the better tool for driveway maintenance. Rear scrape blades can be both angled and tilted!

DO NOT DO IT! Buying a tractor, and THEN looking for a loader is a major mistake! Buy a tractor WITH a loader already attached! Chains will work for snow, but for AK, buy a 4 wheel drive tractor if at all possible!

I know nothing about the JD, but my Ford 1920 is the bigger brother to the 1715, and is a wonderful small tractor. I will never sell the 1920, though I do have a much larger/newer Kubota also.

I think that the reason you can't find them there is that older model is no longer in the supply chain.

Because I have a Kubota L48TLB grapple, weight was not a significant factor for me. My Mid-State Attachments grapple weighs 500#, but also has a fully covered steel back plate, which keeps the branches away from my tractor.

I likely would not have spent the cash for a hydraulic thumb, but my 251 hour machine came to me with a hyd. thumb already installed. It is very nice!
