I think you're right - I have attached a photo. Is this the reverser?[/QUOTE

yes that is the aux. trans but it could be a reverser a stepdown trans or a step down and up trans but move that lever and see what happens

This morning I confirmed that it is a reverser. It was engaged, but in reverse. When I switched it, the PTO turned clockwise as expected, and the tractor lurched forward a tiny bit, instead of backwards as before. With the tires on the ground, the PTO works when the clutch is engaged - in both directions.

Will the PTO clutch engage even if the main clutch is slipping?

Not to get off topic, but my tractor has a 730 Loader. I assume I will have to remove that to split the tractor?

if it won't drive(move) but pto spins, then the front of the tranny is getting power .. and at least thru to the counter shaft probably...

I'd next suspect a broken pinion coupler tube, pinion gear, or sheared rivitrs in teh ring gear, or a broken axle.

pretty much in that order.

Doesn't the fact that when I jacked up the rear end and spun a tire, the other tire spun the opposite way, rule out an axle problem?

Also, when I had it jacked up, the tranny went through the gears with no problems, and the wheels turned.

With a double clutch, can one disc be toast while the other is ok? Would that account for the PTO working properly?

I really appreciate all this great advice. I've learned to ask the experienced folks before taking things apart.

you have a 4spd trans and a pre tranny.. you cannot have a dual clutch.

the reason it may work jacked up is because there is no load. a broke axle can grab at the break site and still turn under no load.

if pto works and wheels won't move.. input is getting power...

If I have a broken axle, shouldn't I be able to hear the differential turning? I hear nothing wrong when I engage the clutch, and the wheels move just a tiny bit. Also, is my differential similar to an automotive one? Are there two half-shafts? Wouldn't one turn even if the other was broken?

I received my shop manual yesterday, so I'm ready to get to work. Thanks again for all the help.
