Thanks. No glue, just pulled it fairly tight. There's a little bounce in the dips but not much.

Just to wrap this thread up.

I replaced the starter with one I bought off eBay and it works just fine. It was advertised as a Hitachi starter - which is OEM brand - for $99 as compared to the dealer price at $350. It looks in every way to be an exact duplicate of the starter that I removed except where I could see a sticker had been peeled off which is just the same size and location of the Hitachi sticker on my original. In its place was a generic "Made in Japan" sticker. I took that as a good sign and perhaps someone out there is selling Hitachi starters in the price range that doesn't qualify as ridiculous. Anyway, it was a good way to get the day rolling.

I added a hitch to the existing receiver and replaced the corroded 12V outlet with a marine version.

I finished up the refurbishment of the UTV with a lube and oil change. Instead of the (also) ridiculously priced Polaris oil filter at $25, I used a Fram PH6017A and it seems to work just dandy. Total cost of the oil change w/filter: $15. Thanks WalMart. :thumbsup:

Now it's ready to go to work. The wife drove it the two miles down to the mailbox today. I think she's hooked. Thanks for all the input, guys.

I already use that particular Fram on my ATV (KodiaK) and I could tell it was similar. I can't verify it's entirely accurate but someone on a Polaris Ranger Forum posted this list of compatible filters:
