You did "seat" the breaks right?

It may be a dumb question but with the tires off the ground and you spin by hand do they have any drag. Maybe they weren't adjusted by the builder. You may only need to adjust the star wheels to get the shoes closer to the drum. If they are adjusted properly then its back to a voltage or ground problem. My 7K trailer had the same problem. I bought it new and the brakes would never lock up. I spent a day checking voltages and grounds to each wheel until I found the Mfg. never adjusted the brakes at the factory and the selling dealer never checked their operation. The star adjusters were fully closed (no threads showing) and had no drag when spinning. I made the brake adjustments and tried again and was able to lock them up.
Also, since you had the drums off did you try to manually move the arm the magnet is attached to and does it move freely to rotate the cam that spreads the shoes apart.

Yep I adjusted the brakes until the I could not move the wheel and then backed off until I could move it. yes I did move the arm more to see how it worked than anything but it was free.

Check the wiring carefully. I have seen builders use 18ga wire for the brakes. No way that's going to carry sufficient current.

Chris

Thanks that is what I was referring to when I said I don't like the wiring it looks small to me. I think I am going to tractor supply and get a 6ft cable with a molded plug and wire the brakes with 12ga wire. Thanks to everyone for your input

Got a little time today to look at the wiring on the trailer, the plug was wired the same as the brakes were refer to pictures in post 30. I cut the plug off and got the new plug from TSC wired in except for the brakes so with all the lights working properly I am going to start back on the brakes. Running new 12ga wire from the new plug to the brakes, hoping to get that done tomorrow.

Good news, went out this mourning and rewired the brakes, run 12ga wire from the plug to the brakes and a 12ga ground which is also grounded to the frame and the plug. I connected to the truck and put the truck in gear while holding the brake controler switch and the truck did not move pressed the accelerator a little still no movement, before the rewire the truck would have crept forward just idling. let off the switch and when the tires got on the gravel I pressed the switch and the tires skidded a little they did not lock up but did leave marks in the gravel so maybe after they get seated better they will be alright at least now I feel safer about pulling a load and being able to stop it. After looking at the wire they used it looks like 16ga wire not big enough for electric brakes.

Good deal! I would also check to make sure the brakes are adjusted correctly.
My grounds are tied directly to the pickup battery, via the plug, using 10ga. wire. Grounding to the frame works okay for some lights, but is not a good practice for dependable braking.

I have not looked on the truck side to see how it is grounded, I figured since the other trailers work just fine the truck is good. but I will keep that in mind.

and for those that like pictures here is the difference in the plugs. the red wire on the old plug was for the battery and the white/black wire was for the brakes.

Just as I said, too light of wiring.

See it all the time.

I hope I don't upset the safety police to bad but I need both tractors about 10 miles down the road. No really I wanted to check and see how my trailer does with this load.

and there is the first tractor secured with the winch and a chain, I grabbed the remote and let the trailer down level secured the tractor and raised it back up for the B26. I didn't have the B26 tied down because I was going to unload it and scrape some gravel I was having delivered and when I loaded it back up I did chain it down.

good trip today, with the trailer loaded the way it is in the pictures it pulled good and it did not beat the the truck up like it did before, I hauled three loads of gravel a couple days ago and set my brake controler to 5 as I normally do with the dump trailer then this morning I didn't think to bump it back up for the 24 foot trailer so going down the hill from the house it did not take me long to remember. but even with the load I had on it I settled on 7.5 with the brake controler and I could tell it was helping and also the exhaust brake on this truck is great lots of help slowing down. So all the work I have done to the trailer is paying off.
