Funny you should mention the psi MadReferee as the instructions that came with the gun said 10 to 50 psi. Then I saw stamped on the nozzle 10 psi max, and it does work better at lower pressures. It's handy having a true regulator at the gun like you mentioned and not just an adjustable flow restrictor.

The gun I picked up is top fed. Still not sure what to do with it, can't put it down with paint in it I don't reckon. Most likely the best solution is some kind of simple wall bracket to hold the gun in the vertical position while in use.

Making real good progress now with the headstock. There remains only the main shaft to be reassembled within the case. Still waiting on a couple of gaskets before that can be accomplished.

Since I now have a nice coat of paint on the casting some of the attention can be directed in reassembling the gearbox assembly.

PineRidge,

Take a look at this spray gun holder from HF. I built a similar one from scrap. It works well holding the gravity fed paint gun. I am sure you have enough scrap around to build one too. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Mornin Mike,
Very nice indeed, great job. Just curious, are you planning on painting the inside of the gear box?

I know thats the way to go, but Im restoring my 49 Farmall Super A and I didnt repaint the inside of the final drives or the gearbox basically because I was too lazy /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif Plus there was still some paint left in there /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif

Scotty,
Most paint and oil do not mix well. I would be afraid of some paint lifting off getting into my gears and bearings causing problems. The oil will keep the inside of the gear box looking good over time. IMO

Re: 3800 Pound South Bend 17\" Turn-Nado Lathe Project

Mornin Farwell,
Actually no, an epoxy paint actually seals the casting and allows the oil to stay cleaner with less contamination. When I was serving my apprenticeship many years ago, I worked for Farrel Corporation and we built some huge gearboxes. They always got painted with a red epoxy paint to seal the castings. Its a pain but the proper way to go if you have the patience. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

ps Another thing, most castings depending upon the particular material are fairly porous. A good epoxy paint will also prevent and casting leakage from the oil resovoir.

Re: 3800 Pound South Bend 17\" Turn-Nado Lathe Project

Scotty,
Thank you, I did not know that. This is what I love about TBN, I learn something new every day.
I have never used epoxy paint, but have thought about it on several occassions. I once managed a motion picture processing facility for ABC television news in San Francisco and was told that the processing room floor had an epoxy paint on it. The floor looked good for the 10 years that I managed the lab. It had a few chemical stains on it that I couldn't get out but that was all.
My lathe has lube cups with oil wicks and sleeve bearings.

Re: 3800 Pound South Bend 17\" Turn-Nado Lathe Project

Scotty South Bend originally painted the inside of the headstock as well as the gearbox. The paint didn't appear to be an epoxy as it came off way to easy with conventional liquid paint stripper. Don't know if they were even using epoxy paint 40 years ago.

I used a high quality oil based enamel on both, we'll see how it holds up.
