That reminds me I need to get some tracer rounds...

is 9mm really cheaper than 223 to fire?

IMO, and around here, yes.
I have 2 9mm pistols and a .223 varmint rifle. Decent 9mm ammo is ~$12 for a 50 box. That would have to make the .223 come in at under $5 for a box of 20. And the only thing you get that cheap is buying in bulk and not really the type of ammo I would shoot through a $1000+ gun.
Good stuff, that will be reliable AND accurate for the .223 costs as much for 20 as 9mm does for 50. So ammo costs is about a third less.
well walmart has your 5$ a box 223.. and that's not bulk.
also.. just buying bulk does not make it bad ammo.
georgia arms is a place I buy pulk packed ammo. it's not milsurp.. it's new production, bulkpacked in metal ammo cans.
i agree.. you CAn find some cheaper bulk ammo.. like south affrican stuff.. and some 70's era battle pack stuff that is milsurp.. etc..

( course you can get bulk 223 as well...)

What brand is it at walmart?
Sure, you can find cheap ammo. But you can also find cheaper ammo than what I listed for 9mm too.
I guess the point I was getting at, is for QUALITY .223 ammo, you wont find it even close to 9mm in price. But guess alot has to do with the style of shooting you plan on doing also. When I shoots my .223, it is for the BEST long range accuracy possible. 1/4" groups @ 100yrds type stuff. And you wont find that under $15 a box. Hence why I reload for the .223.
When I shoot the 9mm's, it us usually just for fun and plinking. Therefore, the most expensive match grade ammo isnt necessary.
But even if you take the cheapest of the cheap, I think the cheapest 9mm is still going to be cheaper than the cheapest .223.
