5w-30 Shell Gas Truck Synthetic vs Mobil 1 Synthetic

Bought the Shell at Tractor Supply, 6qts for $24+tax. Much cheaper than equivalent Mobil 1 by roughly $20. This is for my 2015 F150 2.7eb. Meets Ford specs too. What gives? Is this good oil? Why so much cheaper? The reviews were positive*♂️

Which Ford specs does it meet? WSS-M2C946-B1 is what your 2.7EB requires. Special Ford qualifications for deposits on intake valves and for cam chain lubrication, among other things. When I went shopping not all Mobil-1 5W-30's met that spec.

Most Mobil-1 oils are $26 for 5 quarts at Walmart.

It meets A spec, which in my research supercedes B1, in other words covers the B1 requirement. This was from Ford I believe, but let me find a link to post.

Here is a better explanation

You have it backwards. WSS-M2C946-B1 replaces WSS-M2C946-A. A product meeting A might meet B1 but B1 was not defined yet. And if it subsequently has been tested to B1 they would certainly boast of it.

B1 includes Dexos 1 gen 2 and SN Plus. And probably other things.

You are correct, my bad. Shell oil meets the B1 spec. See pic of back of bottle. IMG_9509.JPG

Uh, thats WSS-M2C945-B1 not WSS-M2C946-B1. The '946 spec was for 2018+, don't know the difference, don't know what 2.7EB you have. I wouldn't rush to change the oil but would look closer before buying next time.

The 3.5EB has had problems with "phasers", the mechanisms used to control variable valve timing. Ford blames oil and has revised the specs over and above SAE API AECA etc.

Mine is a 2015. Man I sometimes miss the days of just using 10w-30 and letting it rip

On You Tube, the Project Farm channel did a test between the oil I bought and Mobil 1. Check it out, pretty surprising

Shell has a good thing going with gas truck. It gets high marks, and a better price. Bitog is talking about it all the time.

If you bought the Shell T6 oil, it should be equivalent in quality to the Mobil 1. There are several grades of T grade Shell oil, T4 is not synthetic while T6 is full synthetic just as the Mobil 1 oil. For some reason Mobil / Exxon thinks their oil is worth more than other synthetic brands.

Maybe they are, but I use the Shell T6 in everything I own-motorcycle, boat motor (4 stroke), cars, truck , tractors and even my lawnmowers not so much because it is cheaper but because it is rated for gasoline and diesel engines and has no friction modifiers in it so I can also use it in my motorcycles wet clutch.

No. What makes M1 more expensive is that its feedstock is very high priced because it is used in plastics manufacture. That's the PAO (poly alpha olefin). You can make it much cheaper using an old process to make the molecules grow from natural gas. This is what Pennzoil apparently are doing. To get to M1 quality, they need some catalytic dewaxing to get the wax out (wax is long chain molecules vs. long chains with sides attached to make lube oil). Otherwise, they'll have to use a lot of pour depressant to get the -40 F/C pour spec.
