If it is cast iron,,don't worry about proving yourself,,,best thing you can do on cast iron repair is stop it from leaking,,or stop hole up from rain getting in,,any thing that is stressed,will probably break,sooner or later and generally sooner.

General consensus is that it isn't Cast Iron, but most likely mild steel or cast steel.

As you can see from the photos, I can only get so much resolution and still be able to post them to the forum. Much larger or sharper and I exceed the 1 meg upload size limit.

For all of you who know what you're doing, I'm sure that seeing it in person and truly identifying what type of metal it is would be a no brainer. There's the 'eyeball' test, spark test, shave test, and several others that I've read about that could be done to know for sure.

If it IS cast iron, I'm in no way experienced enough to be able to competently try a repair and think it would last. I don't have the proper tools to heat and then control the cooling process to help increase my chances of success.
