If your main task will be stumping, you really might want to investigate getting a ripper to replace the bucket. A ripper makes much faster work of stumps for the simple reason that it applies all the power to a 1 or 2 inch blade rather than a 24 or 36 inch bucket. A ripper also allows you to remove stumps with far less disturbance of the surrounding soil. I had a ripper fabricated for my Woods BH90x from a design I developed based on excavator rippers. Cost me about $500. I'd imagine you could get one built for an excavator for about double that which would make the work go a lot faster. Michigan Iron and Equipment built mine (and others) and they are a pleasure to work with. Ask for Bob or Tony and see what they think.

that is a lot of stump that you took on there. how did you get it out of there?

I couldn't lift it out of the hole with my grapple even though the tractor will lift 2760lbs at pivot points. Instead I dragged it up the hole with the backhoe and finally, with the stump hooked on the ripper, pulled the last bit using the tractor drive train. Once it was out of the hole I picked it up with the grapple and drove it to it's final resting/rotting place in the woods.

hey all and update on the progress is a have a friend who is willing to truck hie 20k+ track loader up to the property to uproot the stumps as he says the loader shouldn't have too much trouble lifting/digging out stumps 12" diameter and smaller stumps with the loaders teeth. I have a dozen or so that are 13" up to 30" in diameter that will no doubt have to be dug around very well id assume.

13" to 30" is a big difference from the original description of your project. Good luck with those. The smaller stumps are fun to dig since they give up rather easy.

I finally got my not as advertised backhoe working well enough to dig some of mine. Have spent more time working on the hoe than working in it. You can spend 2 or 3 hours aggravating a 30" stump out. The first stumps I pulled were a couple the 7,000 lb excavator I rented would not move after digging a huge mote around them. I can dig and dig with the 15,000 lb backhoe and just about run out of patience when they finally give in. I'm still a novice operator so I'm hoping to get better as I go. Next repair on my machine will be the AC. It gets pretty hot pretty quick in a glass cab with it not working.

Yea the big big ones I was going to just leave them the 30" ones that is but my friend with the Cat 951c says he can dig them up with little trouble but we will see... The first day of course we blew the hydraulic hose for the bucket and that took the day to get it replaced.... looked at the loader specs and seems this thing weighs close to 30k and has a lifting force of 15k so it should be interesting.

I wish you luck on the stumps as I think ill need it too.. lol

Blown hoses can be part of it. Already had to replace 2 on mine. An experienced operator told me to dig them out, don't try to pull them. Pulling and tugging will for sure blow hoses.

I'm getting a little better at this. I think I'm into some easier stumps too but spending less time than I was on each one.

One thing I've learned is not to spend too much time on one side. I dig around both sides and the far side then move the tractor to the oposit side of the stump. Seems to give in pretty soon after that.

I tend to dig on either side from a central position making a V shaped trench with the stump in the middle. I then move 90 degrees and do the same thing. Usually after that I can budge the stump by pulling on it. If not I move another 90 degrees and repeat digging a bit deeper. Once I can wiggle the stump I stop digging and just pull and push. That's my technique with a 9ft BH on a CUT.

Well so far so good the track loader seems to make easy work on most of the stumps, however the few that are large IE 30"+ take a bit longer as he has to dig down some as far as 4' deep as those poplars seem to have a deep taproot. I get the easy part of grading the dirt after he digs them out and fills in the hole...Lol not that I am any good at using a BB as it is my forst time using one and sure am getting the practice real quick.

I'll have to post some pics so you all can see.
