I know that the difference is of course the size, but is there a major difference in cutting speed with a 10FT MX VS 8MX? I have the MX8 but I swear it takes forever to mow all this land with the MX 8. I am considering the MX10 trading in the 8. I would love to have the 15ft but I can't swing the extra 7 grand.

Any help would be so much appreciated.

Well, the 10 footer is 25% wider than the 8 footer. Assuming that you have all the PTO power that you would need to run the 10, you should be able to get done 20-25% faster I would think. ;)

lol .... thanks. I wonder if it would still give you a decent cut like the MX8 does?

Might be worth waiting to swing the 15 footer....it would almost be twice as fast.

I have an MX10 and about 70 pto hp with a full 3pt mount. It makes quick work of large areas but when the vegetation gets over the front tires, I can't mow quite as fast as I like. Just remember, its a brushhog not a finish mower.

How much horsepower at the PTO are you working with?

I second the comment about waiting to swing a 15' cutter. I just upgraded to one from a 6' mower and could not be happier!

I have a JD 5085. I like the pull behind bush hogs which is what I have now (MX8). With the baby coming not sure I can swing 7,000, they are willing to give me almost $6,000 trade in on the MX8 considering I have had it for just 2 months.

I guess the question is what is slowing you down now? is it rough ground? or lack of power?

IF lack of power, meaning you are travelling as fast as you can without bogging down the tractor, a bigger cutter isnt going to help at all. 25% wider means you would have to go 25% slower.

IF it is bumpy ground slowing you down, and the gear you are comfortable in has pleanty of power, the a larger cutter will be faster proportionally to how much bigger you go. Up until you run out of power and have to slow down.

I'm the opposite of ya bravo, I like the full mount or semi mount mowers better. What size machine are you pulling the cutter with?

I have a 5085 John Deere (85 Horse Power) and have plenty of power, the land has rolling hills and bumpy which slows me down, I can't run wide open or I will bounce up and down like a kid on a trampoline. It has nothing to do with not having the power, that I have, but the mower I should have went bigger with.

Used equipment.
Used 15 foot bat wings are a dime a dozen. From totally beat up to almost new.
Start shopping!

You don't have 85 hp. They advertise 85 hp but you really have around 70 use able (Read: At the PTO). I have the older brother the 5083E with an MX10. In heavy cutting, I have just enough hp to run at around 4 mph. I'm talking grass as high as the front tires. If your clipping a pasture, sure. 15 footer would be a great addition.

Well, I can pull the MX8 with no problem as if I have nothing behind me (pull behind) and the 10MX pull behind is what I was looking at, to help with the cutting time. My land is kept in great condition and doesn't even get above the knees but maybe 1-2 feet above the ankles.

So are you guys saying that I can't pull the MX10 with a 5085E ?

I didnt see anyone say that?

If you can go as fast as you care to with the 8, and it dont work the tractor hard, you will certainly be fine with the 10

70 PTO HP is more than enough for a 10 foot cutter.

I've pulled a Bush Hog 3210 a few times with a 45 HP tractor though knee high weeds and it didn't even phase it at 6 mph.

How many acres do you cut and are there many obstacles? Two foot wider will take a lot of time off the clock, but I am not sure how long forever is in your case in order to justify a 15 footer. If forever is 8 hours, a 10 footer will chop a couple hours off. A fifteen footer would only shave a couple more hours off. Just wondering.
