Another New House Project

Eddie,

The guy building our cabinets only does cabinets. And we had to select the style, finish (paint, stain, glaze), hardware, etc. when we finalized the design. That is why I assumed that they will arrive finshed at the time of the installation. Again, I could be wrong. They are supposed to be done mid-January so we only have about a month or so to find out the answer to this cabinet mystery. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Sounds like they do things different in your area.

Heh, I live in Georgia. The place where 37 y.o. women get impregnated by and marry 15 y.o. boys. What do you expect? /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif

bmac,

In my part of the world they are always finished on site after installation by the painters. If they were finished at the cabinet shop I would think there would still have to be some trimming/nailing/screwing at the site that would require at least some touch-up. Then I suppose you run the risk of the touch-up not quite matching the original.

You're probably correct that you would get a little better finish in a controlled environment but I'm impressed with what we ended up with. You might give your cabinet guy a call and just ask him. Maybe he DOES finish them in the shop and then touches them up after installation. If he's used to doing it that way I'm sure you'll end up with a quality job.

What wood are you using for the cabinets? I'm not much of a woodworker but learned quite a bit about different woods during the cabinet finish process. It seems that maple (and cherry) is kind of hard to get an even finish on it - tends to look "splotchy". Our cabinet guy ended up making several additional cabinet doors because we would try one stain/glaze sample and didn't like the results. It was really trial and error.

Hope this helps.

Steve

Steve, Great job on the house project. I loved the start to finish photos. Bene there done that with my house years ago and a second story addition 12 years ago. The best part is when it is all done. Hat's off to you and the misses for a very nice place. I love the view from the house also.

JimR,

Thanks for the kind words. I totally agree with you, during the project there are times you say "what have I got myself into?". But once you move in and things settle down, you realize it's all worth it.

Steve,

I'm a little embarrased to admit that I have no idea what wood we are using in our cabinets. My wife pretty much handled this aspect of the home design and, while I was in on some of the meetings with the cabinet guy, either it was never mentioned or I zoned out when it was. I think we were more concerned with the "look" rather than which material he was going to employ to get our desired results. You have much more thorough than I have been in this process.

Well, I'm finally getting around to posting some additional shots of the house as requested. I don't think I got all of the shots that you some of you asked for, but it's a start. I don't have any updated pic's of the outside but maybe I can get some soon.

Here's one of the dining room. Nothing special about the picture......just a dining room.

Here's a shot of the Family Room showing the fireplace and book cases. It also shows the large arched niches above the book cases with the "up lights" that I mentioned in a previous post. Mrs. Steve put some little Christmas trees in the niche on the right.

It's amazing the distortion in these photos. The room looks really small. I'm actually standing in the eating area of the kitchen - probably 35' from the fireplace.

Here's a shot from a different angle in the kitchen. You can see the built-in desk at the far end with the laptop.

The arched opening above the fridge is wired for a TV.

This one is of the gas cooktop and hood. You can also see (kind of) the under counter lights talked about in a previous post.

Here's a pic of the finished "window" in the master bath. You can get a good idea of the job the trim carpenters did. This is pretty much the trim that is around all of the first floor windows and some of the doors.

As you can see, it's a walk-in shower with no door. We didn't know if that would work out or not so we had some extra framing put in just in case we wanted to add a door later. So far we're happy with it.

Here's an attempt to see inside the shower area. Again, the camera doesn't do it justice.

Here's the Master Bath tub. The lighting is kind of bright in the picture and makes it look a little funny.

I know, it's kind of fancy but that's what the finance director wanted. /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif

I forgot about this one. There was some discussion about the hidden pantry in the kitchen in a previous post. Here's a shot of the pantry with the doors open.

Spectacular! Great work in every room. I particularly like the glass block wall in your shower. As you know, we have a similarly designed shower going in our house, but I think your idea looks better than the one I came up with.

I don't know about you and your family, but we would have had to do a little "tidy up" job before sharing pictures of our home with the world. Thanks, Steve, for taking the time to take and post the pictures of your beautiful home. And thanks to Mrs Steve if she had any "preparation" to do before you took the pictures. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Good Job!
