I don't think those have the tempering/hardening of a good quality anvil. The price is good otherwise. For general pounding around it's probably OK. A piece of rail may be cheaper...

A few years back, the going rate was $1.00 / pound. Like others, I have a nice chunk of mainline railroad rail that has sufficed for years.

Just noticed an ad on line, in our area, for a 225 pound anvil and asking price is $700.00. While this is in Canada our dollar is close to par. Either a real good anvil or the seller is hopeful.

I have an anvil that looks in about that condition and I bought it about 20 years ago at a farm auction for $40 dollars. There were 3 anvils at the sale.
What kind of grapple is that in the back ground?

I got that anvil when I lived in South Georgia about 20 years ago.

The grapple is a WR Long RBG-2 60 incher. Great tool. I like the rounded bottom design, instead of the flat bottom type. Better for pushing roots, etc

That is a nice looking grapple I have an anbo that is sort of like that and I like how it works. Grapples are great tools and the SS Quick Detach makes them so versatile.

Will anyone own up to buying the Harbor Freight 55 lb anvil?

They don't pretend it is forged: "55 lbs. of top grade cast iron". The two customers reviews aren't complimentary.

I see they have a coupon through August 8 that offers it for $40. Here, scroll down, then 'click to print'.

I have two chunks of RR rail already. Would adding this, to have a flat surface, be worthwhile? Typical use would be a couple of times per year.

I've been watching Craigslist and Ebay, and haven't seen real anvils under 200 lbs/several hundred $, which I would never spend for something I use so infrequently.

Is anybody brave enough to tell the world they bought one? How did it work out?
