Any one seen a drone?

Very helpful. Thanks. We have come to the conclusion these are training flights and not big brother snooping. My next step is filing a complaint with the FAA. And maybe, out comes the .308...
Don't use a rifle. A shotgun with bird shot is safer.
Get a clay launcher and some clay pigeons so you can say you were shooting skeet
when it flew across, and it was at the right distance to look like a clay target.
If you're lucky. it will land on your property so you can have a taxidermist mount
it so that you can display it over your fireplace.

Well.. since nobody can identify it, it's obviously a UFO!

... Your honor, I am convinced it was a small alien spacecraft doing reconnaissance
in preparation for an earth invasion. You should thank me for saving the planet.

A few weeks ago a guy came to my door wanting to sell me a framed picture ( taking from above ) of my property of 3 acres. It was a clear nice pic but for $280.00 at least it could have been taking during the summer time when the flowers are at bloom... not in winter when everything has died off. I did not buy the picture so what does he do with it now??
First thing I would have asked to see is his commercial pilots license if he had one. You cannot make money with an airplane if you are the pilot taking pics or if you are the pilot that flies the one taking the pics without a commercial license.

This is quite amusing to me.

Every state and the federal government of course have laws relating to criminal damage to property, destruction of government property, etc. If you think you can shoot down an aircraft because you don't like it flying above you, you're an idiot.

Aerial photos is legal on a PPL, though I do not believe you could fly someone taking the pictures as that would be a commercial passenger, you could definitely take them yourself.

What do they do with the photos? They slip a new one in a frame and throw yours out. If you're not going to buy it, that photo is worthless to them.

It's a gray area:
Technical FAR Question - Aerial Photography

If someone comes onto your property w/o permission, in some states you can shoot them
(e.g. Texas - to protect persons or property)
If someone flies a model airplane over your property you have a right to stop them.
If they didn't ask permission, it's trespassing. If it were a radio controlled Jeep,
and you whacked it with a baseball bat, I doubt they could do anything.
A low flying UAV would be the same. You can't fly R/C over private property
without permission. Try to fly R/C planes in a Walmart parking lot, and see how
long that will last.

I would probably try to get the police to come out while it is flying over your
property - they might just shoot it down for you.

Like many laws, the FAA PPL commercial restrictions is open to many interpretations.

The shooting down aircraft laws are not. You cannot shoot down something just because it might be "above" your property. You do not own the airspace. There are various laws that if it continued to be a nuisance, you could go after various nuisance/etc. laws, but you still can't shoot it down. It does not matter if the hick Colorado town passes an ordinance or not - it's still illegal on the state and federal level.

Commercial drones are currently not allowed by the FAA. This is referring to local/state/federal government situations. Though if commercial drones WERE in use, it would still be against the law to shoot them down.

In addition, even if it WERE NOT illegal, most people could not for sure determine if it was on their property once at a certain altitude, unless they had substantial land. So the liability for shooting down a hundreds of thousands or millions of dollars of aircraft and related hardware incurs substantial personal liability.

This is not to say I agree with the government watching us via drones, but no matter how you look at it shooting them down is highly illegal and you will certainly pay for it big time!

Twelve gauge with 00 buckshot or TT steel goose loads ought to do fine. 200 ft is 60 or so yards so lead it about 10-15 ft.

I have spoke with the FAA, it is illegal to fly below 400 ft with anything other than radio contolled aircraft. AND, that must be within sight of the operator. AND, not over my property. Also, it is illegal for a commercial drone of any type to fly below 500 ft. We do occasionally get low flying jets out of Norfolk cruising about 150 to 200 feet over our property, but they are pedal to the metal.

Here is a pic of the one that flew over the cabin this summer. I think it was just out taking pictures. The close up is a heavy crop.

It was flying lower but when I came out with the camera he might of thought I was going to shoot it down so it went high and away from us. Being in the part of montana we are I am surprised he would even try to fly one of these around.

That is one of those hexochopters, they can be mounted with cameras and move about pretty good but not a high range, mostly flown by sight as RC type thing by one of your neighbors... If ya watch Gold Rush on Discovery TV they use on for the HERO shots! Watched it Friday they did a entire episode on these things and ended with the opening seine taken by one flying a gyro stabilized HD camera over the larges waterfall in SA. VERY cool, :D

I don't know much about RC but could you take over control with your own transmitter or simply tape "up elevator" to the on position so that when the drone got in your area it would be overpowered by your signal.
