Front-End Loader any use for a Boom pole? after having a FEL.

I have a loader and would love to have a boom pole! (especially for $100 or less)
log arch is just one of the uses I would have for it.

I just picked this up. Almost a one of a kind 3 pt boom/crane. The guy I got it from made and sold about 10 of them about 12 years ago. He didn't bother getting a patent. It goes on the 3 pt but I going to adapt it for my loader frame as well. It has hydraulic control to extend it from about 5' to about 9' when it is fully extended. He nicely put feet on it so it can be stored easy. I can run the hydraulics off my rear remotes. When adapting to the FEL you can get another 9' of height. Haven't tried it yet on the tractor but can hardly wait. I still have to clean it up and repaint it. Together with the hydraulic toplink I just got it should be quite versatile

That is a great piece of work. The feet will allow you to pick up things that are way beyond the capacity of your 3 point hitch. You won't be able to move them but you can lift them and back a trailer under them. Now you just need to go and look for some real heavy stuff to lift:D:D

On my Kubota, rated lift capacity is greater for the 3ph than the FEL... don't have manual in front of me, thus can't quote numbers. Of course, the numbers are quoted at respective pin points...thus as weight gets further in front or behind these, the actual lift weight decreases.

The geometry of the proposed lift makes a lot of difference with the front loader too. Mine won't lift the 430 lb weight box on the end of my 8 foot boom pole when it is straight out and halfway up, but will do it if I lower it almost to the ground and angle the boom pole upward.

To answer the original post question, I think the main use for the boom pole is to lift things when you need to keep them farther away from the tractor, like lifting a rear blade into a trailer or something. If you can lift it farther out, it keeps it from smashing the front of your tractor.

I'm forever finding things that weigh one or two hundred pounds that need to be placed beyond the reach of my FEL. I have a boom pole that replaces the forks on my FEL, gives me another 4-6' of reach..

I finally had a good look at it today. I decided to take it apart and do a nice job cleaning up the paint and repainting. Its only the 2 arms and the cylinder. (3 pins). I manually extended the cylinder, it will go straight out about 9', then another 5' for the boom extension. I am trying to be patient and get it fixed up nice but I am axious to see what it can lift. I think my main limitation will be the tractor itself.

Until I found this one, I was close to copying yours. You always know when you made something good when it starts being copied! Very nice job!.

Your limitations, IMHO, will be as follows, in order of desirability/fixability.

hydraulic relief valve (nothing breaks, this is intended)
tractor goes tippy (add counterbalance weight until you achieve stability)
boom pole bends, mechanically breaks (oops)

Dave,

Thanks for the compliment. One of the main things I like about the design I used is that it breaks down and doesn't take any room to store.

The worst thing about it is that it's kind of heavy (not the boom itself, but when you add up all the pieces - it's probably close to 200 lbs) so it cuts down on the lifting capacity.

I'm really liking the one you have and have been thinking that some kind of extendable boom might be the best way to go in most cases because you don't really need the long one all the time and you can't lift that much weight way out there anyway.

I use mine as part of my 3 pt drag assembly I put together. This works great in places you can't turn around easily. Just pick it up and back up.
