Front-End Loader any use for a Boom pole? after having a FEL.

I would not like to use it on a small tractor or heavy load as it gives a lot of leverage to tilt the tractor backwards.

Maybe with a lot of front weight....

I would agree with that. Must have the appropriate counterweight to be effective and safe. For lifting many things though it looks like it can be very effective.

I have a boom pole and its pretty much worthless with a FEL. I have not used it in 5 years. I did make a boom pole for my FEL. It fits in my bucket hitch and adds another 4' of reach. Its plenty strong. I have lifted my concrete counter weight and 5' 600# bush hog with it many times.

I just picked this up. Almost a one of a kind 3 pt boom/crane. The guy I got it from made and sold about 10 of them about 12 years ago. He didn't bother getting a patent. It goes on the 3 pt but I going to adapt it for my loader frame as well. It has hydraulic control to extend it from about 5' to about 9' when it is fully extended. He nicely put feet on it so it can be stored easy. I can run the hydraulics off my rear remotes. When adapting to the FEL you can get another 9' of height. Haven't tried it yet on the tractor but can hardly wait. I still have to clean it up and repaint it. Together with the hydraulic toplink I just got it should be quite versatile

Looks like a bolt on lift boom for a light truck adapted to 3pt hitch. I bet it could be useful. Like others mentioned, watch your balance.

I suspect the feet are there to support and stabilize this unit while in use. I don't think the builder of this frame intended to use this thing while extended and raised above the ground at the same time.

See! I knew there would be other uses for a Boom pole, some of wich I never thought about, I have'nt used it with my YM yet, although did use it many time with my kubota, I primarily purchased it to move car engines around and really anything heavier then I care to move with hand trucks,
I used it quite a lot when first purchased it 10 years ago but not much in past 4-5 years, and No! it wasn't one of the most expensive purchases at only around 135 for it new, was a good investment. I'm just thinking that a FEL is more of a versatile tool for lifting ,
and if I install a hook could perhaps replace any need for a boom pole, the loader I have has no bucket quick release from the arms as most I have seen do, otherwise the idea of a boom from the front connected to the FEL would be a great idea, Kind of like a hay spear i see on front of some tractors,............ which brings another thing to mind? I have yet to compare the Hydraulic lifting power between the FEL and the 3-pt hitch, i would assume the FEL has a more of a stronger lift?.....................................
and -- clemsonfor-- I live Nth-E Ga, approx 50 miles south of Hartwell only 4 miles off I-85
approx 18 mile from UGA Bull-Dawg Country ( Athens ) if i do decide to sale You have first dibs,;) I have already repainted it (Kubota orange)with the entent of selling, However? is the reason I ask "if any more use for one?":D

Looks very much like a Cherry picker, ( engine hoist ) I'm sure the feet will somewhat stabilize the tractor, But to look at the point of a leverage it looks like it could be made more stable with extentions out the rear towards the length of the end of the boom, just as you would have on a cherry picker,
perhaps maybe not quite as far out. only half the length maybe 3-4 ft or about the distance as you see the pallet its setting on,

Deep, about the lift capacity: I have a ym2000, so mine might be somewhat more but my 240 (american version) service manual lists the tip of the 3 point lift at around 1400lbs, i have no FEL but have read on here from LMTC that the front should lift around 700lbs. Ims sure some will tell me that they have lifted 1000lbs, but like i said i have no personal exp. with this. But i still think the 3pth will be stronger.

PM me if you decide to sell. Thats still a good drive but hey i could meet a TBN member and maybe save a few $ from new.

3 point is usually stronger because of simple geometry. You are lifting from about 2' away instead of 6'. Also the front axle is the weakest point on all tractors. It will fail early if you overload it.

Yes I suppose your correct, we talked about the frontend weakness in a previous thread, I guess why I'm thinking front being stronger lift is because of the hydraulic cylinders being measured by ton force, I get it confused with the lifting capacity...... as You might have gathered I'm not much informed on the Hydraulic aspect of a tractor,:D But am learning;)

HI Steve,

According to the designer/maker, the feet were intended for ease of storage. He was using it off the ground move engines around etc. The only limiting part was too much weight lifting the front wheels off the ground. The boom itself never had issues with strength. I suppose the limit would be your 3pt lift capacity assuming you are not extended too far out and have appropriate front weight to balance. When I get it set up I will do some controled tests and just see what it can do and maybe do a report on it.

Thanks Dave
