Anybody Dip/Chew?

Hunterridge, consider it done. It's almost always better to have help and encouragement, and I'll be happy to do what I can. That includes being honest, and if I screw up, I'll tell y'all.

I really think I've "had my fun" though, and heart attack, stroke, emphysema, lung cancer, mouth cancer and gum disease (to name just a few) have become too imminent to ignore any longer. When you're young, you tend to think you'll live forever, and don't have to worry about your health. As I've gotten older, I've realized that life is quite short, and health is precious.

I've been chewing a little bit of nicotine gum, but none in the last few days. It's nice to know it's there if I need it, but the sooner you get off nicotine completely, the better. But hey, whatever it takes to get off "the hard stuff", just do it. Nicotine gum has come a long way, and I really like the new stuff with the candy coating and mint flavor (Nicorette Fresh Mint). It's more like real gum than any of the other stuff, and the flavor lasts a long time.

Go for it - once the physical addiction is broken it gets easier every day. A friend of mine quit smoking about 3 years ago after he went home to watch is father die an agonizing death caused by a lifetime of tobacco use. He summed it up very well - he said that after quitting, you arrive relatively quickly at a point where you look back on your tobacco addiction and say to yourself, "Good lord, what was that all about?"

You can do it - we all can. The stakes are too high not too, and again - I urge you to look at the positives, which are many, and not the negatives, which are few. And the negatives fade away as the positives keep building on themselves.

Lastly, if there's someone reading this who's "on the fence" about quitting, but maybe you're thinking that quitting "for the rest of your life" is too monumental a task, maybe just tell yourself you'll quit for one day, or one week, or one month, just to see that it can be done. If you go back, at least you didn't use tobacco for a day, or a week, or a month, and you gained some experience and confidence. Just making some effort is good; and one of those times, it just might "stick". The most important thing, in my opinion, is to KNOW that you CAN do it; but you'll never do it if you don't even decide to make the attempt. They didn't take Mount Suribachi on the first attempt, but take it they did. And you just might make it on your first attempt; there's only one way to find out. (Plus, there's no one shooting at you, so you've got that going for you).

I'm looking out my window at a beautiful snow-covered mountain, and it's a bright, sunny day. I think I'll go for a nice walk and get my heart pumping a little.

This planet sure is viewed best from above the ground, and I want you all to stay above ground as long as possible. Do it for yourselves, for your kids, for your dog, or heck, do it for me - I have a lot more tractor questions that I still need answers to! /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

To life!

well guys, thanks a lot for the encouragement, it has been almost 52 hours since my last dip of snuff, I too watched my father pass away at the young age of 50 from a lifetime of smoking cigarettes, I don't want my wife and children to go thru that pain because of my selfishness so I'm giving it a shot, anyways for the others that are giving it a try good luck, we can beat this thing, for those of you on the fence, give it a try, for those of you stubbornly opposed, make every excuse in the book you need, but facts are facts, the stuff isn't good for us, and it hurts all of those around us (wife, kids, family, friends), good luck to all

Hmmm, I'm sure I'm not the only lady lurking on these threads.

Hmmm 34 jeans and 50 blazer, hmmmm, hmmmm.

Oh yeah, stop the dippin, look at all you have go going for you. Hmmmmm

What works for me is to tell myself that I am only quitting smoking until age 80 then I can take it up again. Basically I am quitting for now. Just for now.

I am still chewing the Nicotine gum, and it will be 3 years in June. I figure I smoked for +30 years if it takes me a while to completely get over it, so what. It is better than smoking, or dipping /forums/images/graemlins/smirk.gif

I didn't really do it for anybody else, just for myself (until I'm 80). It took more than one year to get over all the automatic habits, get on the phone -light up, etc. so dont expect miracles over night. It has been soooo worth it.

There is a switch somewhere in the brain were you can turn off nicotine addiction. If you find that switch it is easy to quit smoking. When you stop, concider yourself a non-smoker. No party smoking, or a smoke just to revard yourself for having stopped one week. Buy a tractor instead!

I think the Marlboro man died of cancer. There is no glory in that.

Somebody help me out, what's the difference between "chewing" and "dipping"?

An elder in my church likes to tell the boys "I don't smoke and I don't chew and I don't date girls who do."

GO FOLKS, GO! I quit dipping almost two years ago. I hardly even think about it and I certainly don't miss it.

I consider myself a nicotine-olic. Some people can't handle a sip of booze, without going off the deep end. I'm the same way with nicotine, occasional use isn't an option. I avoid the pitfall of excuses that make you start again, like "I'll just dip this weekend with the guys" or "I'll just have a pinch from my buddies can". I'm scared to death that's all it would take for me to fall off the wagon.

On the day I said "I QUIT", I meant it. Excuses are easy to find, real courage and conviction takes something else.

We're cheering for you!!!!!

Holy crap! I had pretty much abandoned this forum thinking nobody had any interest in the subject and I come back to this!

I'm definately all for being a part of a support group. I am in one over at quitsmokeless.org but the website has been locked to any new members lately (I think they are going to become a pay site). But that site doesn't have anything this one doesn't, unless tractorbynet would like us to take it elsewhere??

Anyway, this past Monday was three weeks quit for me. I feel great but still crave like **** at times. It is definately easier than it was the first few weeks.

If any of you guys have any questions, let me know. I consider myself somewhat of a "quit expert" now with all of the research I've done on it. Mainly dip, but nicotine is nicotine....

Some few things that you will want to watch out for....

Avoid (if possible) your big trigger activites. For me this is hunting/fishing. I took my boat out for the first time since quitting this Saturday and it **** near killed me but I surprised.
Avoid alcohol until you are secure with your quit. This should be obvious, but if you want me to elaborate I will.
Always have a quit aid around. Fake snuff, gum, mints, seeds, nicorette, a bat to hit yourself in the groin /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif, whatever....

I forgot to mention, accountability is VERY important. Tell your wife, tell your kids, tell everyone that cares about you.

Also, we can be accountable for each other. On the other site we post a daily roll call. It is a way for each of us to tell each other that we will NOT smoke/dip that day. We aren't worried about what you did yesterday or what you are going to do tommorow. But if you post roll, you are promising everyone in the group that you will NOT fail your quit brothers/sister that day.

So I'll start one in a seperate post. Just quote it and add your name.
