The cops don’t check vehicle emissions or look under your hood. The are interested in traffic violations. The border patrol checks DL for citizenship or Visa cards. Never heard of emissions cops. In some metro areas, you have to get emissions tests for annual vehicle registration. That will find violations, but you schedule the appointment; it’s not a surprise gottcha check. If they find violations, there is no penalty, except you can’t renew the license on the vehicle until it passes emissions test. In rural counties, there are no emissions check requirements.

Washington State Patrol has a commercial vehicle division and that's their job. They will also make noncommercial traffic stops if someone is driving like an idiot.

Here in Florida seems like they spend the bulk of their time wearing out the poor old boys hauling logs, you see them everywhere beside the road weighing each axle with their portable scales, they know them boys get paid by the ton and are usually pushing the limit or are over loaded so the state wears them out, rock trucks also, but they don't mess with us hauling hay, tractors, equipment etc and we are almost always over loaded , but I always stop at the agriculture inspection stations because they don't play.

Yeah, log trucks are always targeted with portable scales where I live too. Most exceed 80k pounds and the commercial enforcement folks make their lives rough.

I am not sure what he meant, but according to this article, New Jersey can fine up to $30k for this. That's a CUT and huge money to me.
