For years I've been thinking about a 3PT stump grinder but never had enough stumps. Now, I do and am thinking about either a Woods TSG50 or Land Pride GR1525. Does anyone own either or can comment on them or stump grinders in general? My plan is to use for a couple years and then sell it.

Yes... Land Pride... And couldn't be happier. What would you like to know?

Look at Shaver. In a previous life I worked for a dealer that carried Woods and Landpride. But of the half dozen or so 3pt stump grinders we sold over the 20 years I was there, all were Shaver.

Quality of construction, durability, ease of use, service life of carbide cutters and maybe price paid?

OK, thanks.

I have maybe 15 to 20 hours on it. Seems to be of high quality construction; very easy to use, but does have a learning curve; carbide tips look like new still, paid 5K. I'm quite happy so far with no complaints at all.

I have the woods tgs50. It's does fine, if you go too fast it hops around (could be I need new teeth). I prefer the backhoe when I can over the stump grinder. The biggest complaint is being able to see what you're doing from the tractor. If you're on the ground you still have to reach over the fender to operate the remote lever and still can't see. All that said it does a nice job

Sunday to Thursday, you move quickly although you did say you have been thinking about them for years. I analyzed them for years dithering and rationalizing. It seemed that the PTO "majors"--Baumalite, Land Pride, Shaver, and Woods--all had comparable 25" (or so), PTO powered, hydraulically slewed and raised grinders. While I was pricing them I discovered Quick Attach Attachments, a brother company to Erskine (the promotional videos for each company appear to be edits of the same movie). The differences (and the companies makes them into selling points) were that QA has teeth on both sides of the wheel so it cuts swinging L and R and the QA has brackets for suitcase weights on the frame (weight is your friend).

I have only ground 4 or 5 stumps, so I am still learning to operate my QA. I can easily reach my remotes when standing beside the tire, and that gives a better view of the operation. However, after each series of sweeps the tractor must be backed 6-8" which I do from the seat where the view is not as good. The QA has a scale on the height cylinder that is handy. If the Land Pride doesn't have such a scale, I suggest you rig one. The cutting head bounces when fed too quickly, and for some reason that I think is inherent in the design, bounces more going from L to R than going from R to L (as viewed when operating the grinder). The operator's manual recognizes this and notes: "If the attachment tends to chatter on the return stroke (left to right), suitcase weights can be mounted on the frame for additional stability." Perhaps that is why the other manufacturers have teeth on only one side.

I think you will really like it. I mounted the electric remote on my right fender just above the rear remote handles, and it makes it very easy to operate.
I'll just presume you're sitting in the tractor seat? If no cab, a guy could reach over the fender to operate.

How long does it take to grind a 12" to 16" stump?

Well, I educated myself in advance so when the opportunity presented itself I was able to make what appeared to be a snap decision when in reality things were in place and waiting for the right moment.

Yes, no cab here; MX5400 Kubota. The closer the stump is to ground level, the better; also will depend on hardwoods or softwoods. I take mine down at least 8 inches, so you are probably looking at 10 to 15 minutes, once you get the learning curve down. Run at full rpm's...

Availability of almost anything being what it is if you want anything you need to be prepared to make an informed decision almost immediately when the opportunity is presented. Good work.

Here's how this ended up. I did buy a two year holdover Landpride stump grinder that was faded a bit and the dealer wanted to get rid of. It works beyond my expectation and is just wonderful at solving stump issues. They used to be a real problem for me because burning was a hassle and fire risk plus I had to mow around them. It was a constant pain.

Mine is a smaller model so it works best with a flush cut to the ground, year-old stump that has started to decay. I started with two 20" soft maple stumps that were cut last year. One was flush and the other several inches high. The flush cut one took all of 10 minutes to cut maybe 8" deep while the taller stump was harder and took longer. That one didn't look as nice.

There was a pile of wood chips mixed with the dirt so I shoveled it up and took back to a flat ground burn area. After a rain, I was able to rake up the wood chips to burn and I just filled the hole with dirt. I tamped it down seeded, strawed over it and put the sprinkler there. In a week or two it blended with the lawn and you would never know.

Since then, I tried to rototill over a chipped 16" fresh cut spruce hole to smooth things and just made a mess because of all the remaining roots. I won't do that again. On another stump I got rid of what I could of the wood chips and filled in the hole. I suspect grass won't grow as well since a lot of chips are in that hole so I guess I'll learn.

Next year I've got a lot of cedar sumps to grind so that should be easy. I highly recommend a stump grinder and considering their high resale value, would even buy a new one if you got a good deal on the buy. FYI.

Old thread but keep in mind that Shavers are quite a bit more jack than the Landpride is and (I think) the Landpride is actually an orange painted Erskine.

The other thing is the carbide teeth. Bauma Lite uses a proprietary tooth design whereas LP and Erskine as well as Shaver use the Green Manufacturing carbide teeth and Green pockets too.

Just bought a new Landpride and I'm waiting for it to be delivered.

SG25. Besides, it matches my Kubota's. Was not a cheap date but today, nothing is a cheap date.
