I first started feeding hummers last summer, but took down the feeder in the fall. Last December I was about to leave on a trip that would last several weeks when I found one of them in the garage and he wouldn't leave. Tried to herd him out with a broom, then compressed air, but it was chilly out and I'm sure he liked the warmth. I had to go, so I set up the feeder inside, closed the doors, and took off. When I came back I heard a squeak when the garage door opened and there he was. The feeder was half full and he still didn't want to leave, so I moved the feeder to a spot just outside the back door and left it open. He eventually got out but every now and then when I have the garage door open a bird will come inside and fly a loop around the place. I'm thinkin' it's my old friend. Anyway I kept on feeding from then on, and about six weeks ago the one feeder really started getting swamped and the birds were emptying it every day. So I bought another feeder with twice the capacity and now the two of them will go three days before the birds empty them. They're so thirsty I bought a bigger pot so I can make up a couple gallons of nectar at a time and now it's a lot easier to keep up with them. I'm guessing that the drought around here has made them even more dependent on the feeders, and I'll be curious how many stay through the winter.
