What is the best auger size to order with a new post hole digger? The PHD will be used for just general homeowner use.

Jeepguy,
I say it would depend on what size tractor you have. For use around the house I would want as large as the tractor can use. I use a neighbors 12" when I need one, and can't see having anything smaller. Works great for post, trees and any other time I need a hole. I used it for setting my deck as well as for telephone poles for lights on my ice rink. If I didn't have access to my neighbors like I do, I would have gotten one with a 12" auger a long time ago!

Thanks for the immediate feedback. I will be using the PHD with an L 3010. I had ordered a 9 " with the Bush Hog but i had better call my dealer to change it to a 12 auger".

You need to determine how the digger will be used. If used primarily for putting in posts (4-6") then I would stay with the 9" auger. Large holes require much more dirt to be tamped in around a smaller post. Tamping in the dirt to get a solid post takes the most time and work. It is also harder to get a 12" auger to go in the soil in my area (lots of clay). If you want to plant a few trees, the 9" can also be used to dig 3-4 holes close together and the rest dug out by hand. I have 6, 9 and 24" augers and the 9" gets used the most. 6" rarely used and the 24" for trees.

I thought that it wasn't the size so much as how you use it. (bet I get in trouble for this)

Does anyone have a suggestion as to brand. I was thinking of a Bush Hog #2101(dealer wants $730 for it) but when looking at the specs see it is only compatible with up to 9" augers. If at a later time I would want to purchase a larger auger I may not want to commit to this model. Are the Land Prides #25 series a better model ? or am I just worrying about nothing?

I would also agree on the 9" auger as well. If you are using it to put in fenceposts you are going to be doing alot of extra tamping with the 12". I've got three augers and my 9" is the most used one as well. I don't use it as much now that I have the post pounder but still comes in handy for one or two posts. What are you going to be using it for?

As far as brand goes if you are going to go out and use it everyday then I'd buy a better one, JD, Woods, etc. However, if you are going to just use it occassionally I'd just get the King Cutter one. They are less than $400 and the one that I have has held up really well. I've had it seven years now and only had to replace a bolt around the gear box.

Jeepguy90,
I bought a Bush Hog 2101, just over a year a go. I like it real well, except that it uses a strange shear pin instead of a bolt. I have used it in some very hard clay with flint rock mixed in. It has done as good a job as a digger can do in those conditions. I payed $635 for it with a 9' double flight auger and bear claw point. The Bush Hog rep. could not believe that a dealer sold it for that price.

Thanks for the info. Jerry. Gives me more confidence in the B.H. PHD purchase. I did call another dealer for a price($695) but since I mde a pkg . deal with the dealer also delivering the L3010 I guess I will leave it as is.
