Nice Block Neil

Do you have power down to the dam for a pump or are you using a windmill or not irrigating from it ?

Regards

Really, we've got a lot of places around here where the housing is built tighter than you are and we're supposedly rural. Half the time it started out as a family farm and then somebody decided to give or sell part to the kids for a house and so on. The worst one is: the farm house gets so bad that its better to move a mobile home into the yard and then sell the house off (while keeping the mobile). I've seen farms split in 5 acre hunks that weren't much wider that the house but long enough for a race track. Looks like you've got a real nice set up.

Send some more pics next time you go up, the area is definitely different than here. (Our ground is all whiite right now /w3tcompact/icons/laugh.gif).

I have a Petrol Davey Firefighter pump. I used to cart it down in the wheelbarrow but now have it plumbed in and a little roof over it. Now I just carry some fuel down and let her rip.

I irrigate the North, West and East sides of the house with it. (North is the dam end) Just nice to have a green bit around. We have town water but the plants/grass love the dam water.

I also hand water trees around the dam with the water and they are growing much faster than other trees on town water !!

Yes some other estates around here are only 1 acre. They were way too small for us and then we had heaps of neighbours that close. Not for me.

Here is another pic showing our house (circled) with some of the natural bush etc.

I should have bought the blocks below ours and I would have had enough for a runway !!

Are they pretty much all 1 story homes? They all look like large, what we call "ranch style" homes.

Yep, probably 90% of homes on acreage here in this region at 1 storey, slab on ground type housing.

Ours is 2 storey and that's what we wanted.

In suburbia, the mix is probably 50/50 with more new homes being built 1 storey these days, while most oldies are 2 storey !

Neil,

It's a similar situation around here. Most homes have been built 1 story, with the older stuff 2 story. I've noticed though, that the upscale stuff is starting to go back to 2 story, or 1 story with finished, walk out basements that look like the main floor.

A lot of ours came from the oil crunch in the 70's. Everybody started building smaller houses. Now energy is cheap and insulation plentiful and the houses are getting bigger again.

I assume the slab floors there are due to easier cooling? We see a few slabs here, but they haven't been real popular because the floors are too cold in winter. They're just starting to make a come back with radiant floor heating.

Yep a lot of very upmarket new houses are 2 level, but the basic house is now normally always slab on ground single storey.

Slab is the cheapest way to build here. Timber floors off the ground is how we did it way back but too dear and termites etc. are an issue.

I am in the sub-tropics and am not sure how it is done down in our cooler climtes.

Cheers
