Hi I have been lurking on this board for quite a while.

After months of thinking about it, I am finally ready to buy a tractor (my first if you don't count a lawn tractor!), for my 9 acre spread in the Black Forest area of Colorado Springs. the lot is mostly flat with some gently rolling slopes in the woods. I have about 4 acres of woods, 4 acres of meadows, and the rest is the very long gravel driveway. The only uses I envisage for the tractor are removing dead wood and vegetation from the woods (it has never been done), mowing the meadows, grading and snow removal on the driveway.

I could only find three tractor dealers within 60 miles, two locations for the same Deere dealer, and one for Kubota. I tried the John Deere 2305, 2320, and 2520. I liked the Kubota better, except for the rocking HST pedal - I preferred the two pedal arrangments of the Deere. The tractor I felt most comfortable on was the Kubota 2320 - the dealer had no B2620 for me to try.

So I am down to two tractors, both with HST the Kubota B2320 or the Kubota 2630, both with LA304 leader, 48 Rotary cutter, 60 rear blade, and tires filled. I assume there will be little difference in "feel" between the B2320 and the B2620.

Prices out of the door (meaning including taxes and everything) I have been quoted are $15,160 for the B2320 and $16,575 for the B2620.

Three questions: I like the size of the B2320 for the woods, and as a first tractor it feels very comfortable, but the B2620 is barely larger Is it worth the price difference?

There is only about $1000 difference between the Kubota 2620 and the John Deere 2320 with the same implements - any reason why I should reconsider and look again at the John Deere? The John Deere is the more expensive one. both Kubota and John Deere dealers have been in Business for something like 40 years.

The implements (including the filled tires, I was originally going for weights) are the suggestions from the dealer. He said I could use the FEL and the back blade to clear the snow. Any suggestions before I take the plunge?

How much mowing are you going to do? I haven't seen these two in person yet, but went through the a similiar descision when choosing between a B2630 and B3030.
I chose the B2630 as mowing was not the primary reason.
If the machines are pretty much the same size/weight you are only likely to notice a signifigant difference for PTO operations.
The extra HP would help in the extra tall grass, but might never be missed otherwise. It is always nice to have a little extra oomph, but with the price of fuel these days you should consider if you really need it.

I have four acres of meadows... and all needs mowing.

I know there has been threads about tires - half an acre of the meadows on my land is very marshy, and I don't know if I could mow this, even with R4 tires - all the tractors I am looking at are sold with R4s. As I have no lawn, I might ask the dealer to put AG tires on the tractor I buy.

Still thinking 2320 vs 2620!

If your meadows are just grass, weeds and the occasional sub-1" sapling, go with a 60" light duty cutter on the 2620.

With the 2620 you can also get the stronger LA364 loader.

With a stronger loader and mowing a priority, I vote you get the 2620, that said if you are tight on the money I bet you the 2320 will accomplish most jobs.

OK... The B2620 is $1411 more than the 2320 out of the door, and the 2620 does have the better loader (LA364 versus LA304), so it will be the 2620!

jelc,

For 4 acres I would strongly suggest a 60" cutter. If you go with the 48" you will only be selling it down the road at a loss & trading up.

Good Luck & Have Fun !!

Actually, I am just back from the dealer - he has just received a B2620, which I saw in the crate... most likely, that's the one I am going to get.

I did ask him about a 60" rotary cutter - he said that because of the altitude (my land is at 7400 feet), I should stick to the 48". I assume he means the engine will lose power because of the altitude?

Must be awesome living up there. Have heard Colarado is a beautiful State. Make sure you get us some pics of your new machine with Pikes Peak Rocky Mountain High as a nice backdrop. :)

The price difference should be closer to $1000. The quote I got for a B2320 was $900 less than the B2620. Check the MSRP on kubota.com. The quote you got for the B2620 sounds like it is MSRP assuming something like 7% sales tax. The B2320 looks like it is discounted a few (small) percent.

[edit] I see now that you got a rear blade and a rotary cutter in the deal, so these are sounding like good quotes. Still, the price difference is higher than I would expect.

Thanks! The tax is 4.9% here in Colorado Springs, so I'll check the msrp for both tractors on the Kubota website.

I did the math and it seems I am only getting 8.3% discount on the tractor (B2620) and implements. I was hoping for more. I can save $150 by going to the factory supplied 4 ply AG tires instead of the industrial tires they sell the tractor with. As I have no lawn, I might do that!

The dealer is telling me to fill the rear tires, at a cost of $170, and that the weights would cost me $250. I would rather have weights - are there any cheaper aftermarket weights available for the Kubota?

I just got a 2920 with loader. Dealer had 23 and 29 and made me a deal for $400 over the 26. The 23 is same physical size, just smaller tires. You will be pleased with the tractor.. I previously had a JD4100 and I am having to adjust to the clutch and lack of position control. Be sure to have the dealer adjust the quarter inching valve to work as Kubota advertises. I did not want a larger size tractor. The 3 speed transmission is a plus.

Thanks... Monday, I'll see if I can get a better deal on the B2620! If I were offered a 29 for $400 over the 26, I would take it!

I got the B2320, the B2620 was $700 more at the shop I got it from. But maybe I got charged high to begin with.

I used to wish I got the bigger engine, but with 8 hours on the clock, tilling and using the loader, maybe the only reason I could think that the larger has a slightly bigger loader. I never thought I would use a loader, comes in handy.

For what its worth, 8+ % off of list would be a fair deal around here. Obviously more is better, but your local dealer does need to make a buck. You'll be glad you went for the 26 over the 23 !

I got a 2320 and love it. I moved more dirt in 3 hours with my 54 in. box scraper than I thought possible. My primary reason for the purchase was to mow my 2.5 acre yard withe the MMM. I have about 4 acres of pasture also. If I get to a point where I want to mow that, I would definitely want to upgrade to something that would pull a 60 in. mower (minimum). It would save tons of time. A larger bucket would also have been nice. Mine is working good for my current situation though. Once I complete the dirt work and landscaping around my house, my loader work and scraper work will be limited.

Whbob - can you tell me what you mean by having the dealer adjust the hydrolics to work as Kubota advertises?

Jelc,

Congratulations for the nice machine. I have the older sister of the 2320 and it is a very good machine. If you are going to skid trees the other thing I would say you want to buy or make is one of those contraptions that attaches to the 3PH. I don't know what it is called but, using chains it allows you to lift up the butt end of the tree and drag it behind the tractor. Those B-Kubotas really rock!!! You will not be unhappy. You might be able to make wheel weights out of concrete. It takes more time then to write a check, but it could be done for about $50.
