kevin, there's too many different sized nuts and bolts, and therefore, a wide range of torque specs. The Workshop Manual lists torques for "General Use Screws, Bolts and Nuts" ranging from 6.87 ft./lbs. for 6mm up to 362 to 419 ft./lbs. for 20mm bolts. Of course, if you're like most folks, you're not going to use a torque wrench for a lot of the little jobs. How about 80 to 93 ft./lbs. for rear wheel mounting.

bird,
thanks for the info. i agree about not using torque wrench for alot of jobs. i have found rear wheel torque to be VERY important, based on my experience w/ L35. I am a plumber, and some of our employees are not good at maintenance. we have had to modify both rear wheels, which had the lug holes wallowed out from not checking torque regularly. in general, is it possible to use 1 torque wrench for most tasks? do they come in specific ranges (ie 40-120 ft/lbs, 100-300, or are they just 0-xx capacity?) also, what size box blade and brush hog are you using on your 2710? i'm looking at 5'.

thanks,

kevin

Kevin, yes, different torque wrenches are designed for different ranges. For example, I have here a Sears catalog that has 1/2" drive for 25-250 ft./lbs., another for 20-150 ft./lbs., another for 30-250, etc. and cheap beam type for 0-150 ft./lbs. Of course you can also get them with 3/8" drive for lesser torque ranges and 3/4" for greater torque ranges. As we've said, you don't use them for everything, but if you did, you'd need one or more of each of those three sizes at least. Some of the rotary cutters have blades that are spec'd in the vicinity of 600 ft./lbs. That would either require a 3/4" drive torque wrench or a torque multiplier for the 1/2" drive model. In my personal experience, I have found that my 425 ft./lb. rated air impact wrench has always been able to remove the blades, and I figure it gets them tight enough going back on, too.

And my box blade, rotary cutter, and finish mower are all 60" or 5' models. My tiller is only 40"/w3tcompact/icons/frown.gif; wish it was a 54" to 62".

Kevin,

I have two torque wrenches, a small Mountz that has a dial indicator, and goes from nearly zero, to about 50 foot pounds. It was pricey (~~ $400 /w3tcompact/icons/shocked.gif), but is deadly accurate, and because of the design, you don't have to worry about where you put your hand. My other one is an "average" click-type that goes from about 15 foot pounds up to 150 foot pounds. Over that, I use the "human on a balance beam" method of torquing...
