Band Saw vs Abrasive Chop Saw

Sounds like that bandsaw needs a new blade or i abuse mine too much.
I'm thinking blade too. My little Portaband will do that in a couple minutes. :confused3: Maybe a thinner kerf? 15min is unacceptable.

I use carbon steel blades to save money, so I run it on the lowest speed to make the blade last longer. Cutting thru rust is hard on blades too.

I took a page out of BukitCase's notebook and made myself a bracket for 45° miter cuts on the bandsaw.

It saves a lot of time re squaring the back vice jaw to the blade. Would much rather have an Ellis, but I find this works well for me.

I scratched a witness mark at 90 degrees for my 30 year old cheap Taiwan bandsaw. Taking it back to 90 degrees is pretty quick. Question is if I was smart enough to scratch a witness mark for teh 45 degrees. Saw is buried so not likely to answer that question.

My abrasive saw sits in the basement somewhere unused for years. I did get a Milwalkee cold cut metal circular saw that is pretty cool. I need to figure out some sort of track thing to get more accuracy. Holding against a straight edge was not too accurate either. The wet cut metal chop saw at my friend's shop is the bomb. Accurate, fast and cold. Messy with the cutting solution though.

Buddy of mine called me the other day wanting to know if my old WellSaw saw could cut 8 inch round steel. I said I think so... He shows up with a 63" piece of 7 1/2" round steel that weighs as close as we can estimate about 825 pounds. Made two cuts, one to clean up the end and another to get the 36" piece he needed to build a power hammer. I paid $150.00 for this saw and use it constantly No way would my chop saw do this..

I really like that. Would a mirror image of that work? I've got the cheap HF model, what measurements would you need and do you take pay pal?

Pretty easy to make your own. Try PM-ing tbn member BukitCase as he will have better details on file than the description I could give you.

Thanks for posting the link, Steve. I read the first line of your post and started laughing. Will save the rest for reading later tonight with a cold one in my hand. :drink:

Thank you. I am going to study this and see what I can do. Remember I'm the old guy trying to teach myself welding, so far the teacher will not let me show anyone any of my attempts. Thank goodness HF sells black electrical tape by the dozen rolls, so as soon as they cool a little I wrap them with tape. I have gotten some warping and joints that are somewhat out of square but close is good enough as long as no one looks behind the tape , right?
