Good morning ,I agree that you would need to break that 1400 foot run.You probably wouldnt get any strain on wire over that distance without purposely doing a suspension fence>Not great for animal containment in small areas.I only normally do about 100 metres in each run ,it helps keep tight.(just finished replacing about 2 kilometres of fence that washed away):(

With a wire grab and a 1 ton Come along secured to an anchor such the opposite side of a H brace or truck or tractor, there is no problem pulling a roll or 1400' of wire tight, very tight. We have had no problems having to retighten over the years. Deer and hogs breaking strand here and there, yes. On our place this is the way it has been done for close to a 100 yrs. My grandfather was the fence builder and demanded the 4-5' min. deep holes for H bracing and corners and that has been passed down from my father, to me and so on. I have 1 more mile long fence to build. The we start some cross fencing, have read alot of ideas on this thread I am going to try out on the cross fencing. Pretty cool with all the different methods everyone uses to build a fence.

My fence project is going to be exactly that. A combination of the methods I have read about on here. Gonna buy my 2 7/8 pipe tomorrow. Between pipe, tposts and cement it is enough to make me cringe. I found a welder to weld the braces. Hopefully I will start setting corners next Monday and Tuesday.

Updated today. The dozer finally got out there and hopefully he will be done tomorrow. When he cleared the fenceline I found some gullies that I did not know were there. Is there anything I need to do to when I set the posts? The gullies are in the middle of my 1400' run so I can put an H brace between them. There are two gullies fairly close.

Spent all day last week trying to drill holes with this.
photo-34.jpg

I had to call in a guy with a skidsteer and he made short work of all of the holes. I got all of the braces and wood posts through the gully area cemented in.

I am going to start pounding t posts and pulling wire this week. After trying to drill holes in this stuff I am planning on renting a compressor and post driver.

"Hard ground?" What is that?

I did a little fence work between rain showers today. I put in 5 t-posts to finish a section. The ground was so soft I put in 2 full depth by putting my weight on them-no pounding. One hole I dug for a wooden post hit water at about 8 inches, then it overflowed. I'm on a hillside, not lowlands. There has been about 20 inches of rain this month. Lots of trees falling over.

So how long do you think those posts will stay straight?

Long enough for me to buy some longer posts next trip to the farm supply store. :)

A 6ft post went all the way in, so I changed to a 7ft one, and it went all the way down, by hand. I'll try an 8ft when I can find one.

And, I moved the mid-fence brace posts to a solid location.

I purchased one of these for my fence work and I have real rocky soil. I used it to set 6' t-posts on my 10ac and it sure made the job a lot easier. Put my Honda generator and compressor in the back of my UTV and just drove around setting t-posts. Make sure to wear HEARING protection!!!

What size compressor did you use? What was the cfm air volume?

Got back after it today. I unrolled 2000' of barbed wire by myself. I used this handy roller and some wire.
photo-38.jpg

I had some sucker rod I should have put through the 3pt arms but I didn't want to wrestle with the PHD. I got some of the posts set.
photo-36.jpg

And the rest laid out.
photo-36.jpg

I already realized I should have pulled a wire first and used that for my straight line. I relied on a rifle scope to line up the posts and it is less than perfect. I am renting the compressor and pounder next week to set all of the tposts. Then hang the gate and pull the other 4 strands. This is definitely a learning process and I think if I ever have to do one again it is going to go much quicker. I have a helper lined up for next week so that should help out. We get to fence his place next.

Just a thought after looking at the photo. I always fill the hole to the top and just a smudge above the ground with cement ,(tapered slightly from the pipe to the dirt). This keeps the cement/pipe joint above ground and shed's water away. helps increases the longevity of the pipe (rust)

I went back and filled them all yesterday with dirt and tamped them down real good before I ran the wire. I did not have enough cement to get above ground level. I planned it that way but when my phd didn't work the skidsteer made a bigger hole than I had planned for. He had a 10 inch auger and mine is a 9

It will last a long time the way you did it , just a "tip" I have been taught years ago.
Your comment or observation on stringing your 1st wire to use as a "guide" is the easiest and quickest way. I usually will put on the top wire from the top of the fence so the remaining lower wires dont want to "grab" the wire you used for the line as your unrolling them out, Make sense? When putting in the "t" post I use another post to keep the 1st wire away from the t post I'm pounding (barbs are **** on the hands)

I finally finished this up today and wanted to make sure I completed this project after all the help I got on the net.
photo-56.jpg

photo-57.jpg

I used 2 7/8" pipe and cemented the corners and braces 3.5 feet into the ground. On the uneven ground I used fence posts cemented 3 feet in the ground.
photo-61.jpg

I ended up getting cheap and going 13' in between t-posts.
photo-58.jpg

I sunk the 6" gate posts 4' in the ground and hung a cheap gate.
photo-59.jpg

This entire project took me 5 full days to finish. I had a helper for a half day for 4 of those days. I started around April but I could just never get a chance to spend a full day working on this. Tuesday was tough but the Lord blessed us with a breeze today. I learned a bunch and if I ever do one again I am sure it will look better and go faster. I just couldn't get a straight line like the ones I see driving down the road. I pulled a tight wire for the posts but I guess it wasn't tight enough. I did not use many lineposts because the ground was just too darned hard. Next time I will use 2 7/8 pipe for line posts every few posts. I just wanted to share the final project in case anyone else is considering trying.

hi the grouse , isnt it more satisfying to do it yourself.Dont be too worried if a few star pickets are a bit off, Ive seen alot worse. I wish I had your flattish ground , even if hard ,Mine is a bit mountainy and full of rocks. Ram a picket 12 inches and hit big rock, move a bit try again. At lest you can say you did it yourself and it only gets easier next time.
Bye from australia
