Gents I am looking for a little input from some season tractor folk regarding weed abatement. I run a new BX25. If I were to offer weed abatement what would be your weapon of choice to do it?

A Flail Mower?
A Rough Cut Rotary Mower?
A Disc Harrow?
or...

As far as what kind of material, just basic grasses and weeds, no or few saplings etc and nothing more than rolling hills if any...

TIA!

abatement is not the term I would use, bush hogging service would be a more appropriate term, and your answer. abatement to me would be spraying, which you need to be licensed to do...well worth it if you're serious and full time.

The term abatement brought to mind spraying for me as well. For spraying I purchased a 40 gal tank mounted to hook to my 3pt. It came with a 12 volt pump which meant I had to run wires.

I purchased a roller pump and PTO adapter and converted to PTO power. The spray unit came with fold out wings which lets me make about a 12' pass.

Mowing/Shredding/Bush hogging is another deal altogether. Also throw in finish mowing. I am considering a Bush Hog SQ84T. This is a multi-spindle mower with about a 10 inch offset. It is lighter than a single blade 7 foot shredder, doesn't stick out as far in the back but does stick out about 10 inches on the right side which will let me mow close to objects without getting the tractor too close to the object. Requires less hp than a single spindle mower.

Just saying.

I could benefit from the same counsel --- I'm using a flail. But, I really want to try a disc. I hesitate to buy one, though, without knowing before hand that I can get superior results. The flail basically chews the weeds up well enough so that in two weeks time, there's nothing left but "dust". The down side is that you leave the short stuble to immediately begin to grow again. I'm thinking that the disc can bury that stuble.

Looking at your location (and being from So Cal myself) I think weed control, brush control and heavy mowing would be better advertising terms for your service. Here in Texas I use a Bush Hog for seasonal pasture and heavy mowing. Brush hogging and bush hogging are common terms here, but not so much where you're at.

Check out your local rental yard to see what they have that will fit your tractor, like disc harrows, post hole diggers, etc. Offer more than just weed services to customers and they'll find all sorts of things for you to do (and pay you for) with your tractor!
