Everybody has two stories about getting vehicles and equipment unstuck. One about how much iron it took, and one about how little. There is no perfect solution.

True. And a lot of that has to do with knowing (or not) how to use it. The winch boxes limits are pretty much how well you can anchor it, (I saw one that was in a hole so deep that only the very top was visible) the strength of the attachment points, and the winch capacity and number of line pull. This can be moved with a pickup and skid
steer capable trailer, plus I'm sure the OP could use a skid steer for other uses.

forestry winch for 3pt hitch on a tractor. long cables that are already on a spool. that is driven off PTO on rear of tractor. it sets down with more thought to dig in, to keep tractor moving backwards as you winch a log to the tractor.

if you need more pull in the winch, block and tackle it. so cable does not break.

there be some out riggers for cranes, generally for flat bed trucks and commerical trucks. perhaps some out riggers on a truck, so you can let out riggers out and let them drop down into the ground, to use as an anchoring point.

your cables / straps / rope. is going to be an issue as well. being rated for amount of pull on it. but also safety. if it breaks, it can and will kill.

generally there are various things to make, cables, chains, ropes safer, if they do snap. example chain, weave a rope through the holes. so if chain breaks, the rope holds the chain together, and keeps it from flying any which place.

===========
having actual tow hooks or like on vehicles going to frame,is also another issue. just wrapping around an axle. may mean bye bye axle.

===========
TLB (tractor loader backhoe) maybe on tracks. hook tow strap between FEL (front end loader) and what ever. and use backhoe with tires going in reverse to attempt to pull everything out.

have had to do this multipule times just getting 2WD TLB of mine unstuck, and playing an octupos in seat, operating FEL, steering wheel, gas peddle, backhoe, steering breaks, diff lock. and keeping an eye on everything, while communication with driver in other vehicle. it quickly comes down to a slow process as you 1/4 inch your way out as you operate it all.

===========
driver of vehicle can be a big issue as well.

have had to save many folks that go down into my pasture, and then unable to get up hill to get out of pasture. everyone wants to give it more gas, and ends up spinning tires.

having good mirrors showing all tires, and having experience of vehicle can help, and just giving it enough gas to almost spin tires, but not actually spin tires. can keep me going and get me unstuck more times than actually spinning tires.

===========
there are some "strap on road chains" for say up in canada during winter. that wraps right around tires. you can not legally drive pretty much any were in the US with chains on regular roads. but off road it is a different story, and assuming off road and stuck. if the chains get you unstuck. so be it.

============
there is also a winch, that bolts directly onto tire rims, you swap out your lug nuts for what comes with kit. and do this to all tires. and then when ever stuck, toss winch on what ever tire you want winch on. hope in vehicle and let the tires spin on purpose to winch yourself out.

============
the folks noting about letting tire pressure out. to let the tires squish and gain traction, is and can be a big thing for traction as well.

many times folks, need to go through the "first tractor to them" and needing to let air out of there tires to gain traction.

============
ya some of these ideas and doings above kinda far out there for units you need to pull out. but *shrugs*

If not a dozer I would lean towards skidder.

I beg to differ. Mixer Upright.3gp - YouTube

I'm sure they're spendy. A guy with some fabricating skills could build his own.

I'll agree that's impressive but a truck stuck to its axles or worse frame in mud requires an incredible amount of pull to move. I'd like to see some real world pulls with that skid steer and winch where something is really stuck and not just layed over

Those winch boxes are impressive and certainly will allow a smaller machine to pull bigger things out. My reply was not referring to those specialty units. I was talking only about a small machines capability to pull things out on its own by pulling with its own tractive force.
