I don't know about everyone else here, but I need a truck way more than 5% of the time. Maybe I need a 3/4 or 1-ton for only 5% of the time, but for about 85-90% of the time I need a truck. I don't need my truck for work. I just drive it to work. But what if I'm at work one day and realize I need to grab a sheet of plywood, a couple 2x4's and 3 sacks of concrete mix from the lumber yard or HD/Lowe's to work on a little project that evening. If I was in a daily driver car, I wouldn't be able to stop after work and get it. I'm kind of spontaneous and decide to do stuff like that alot. That's why I like to have a truck that can be a daily driver, get great fuel mileage, can carry light cargo/loads very frequently and can carry pretty heavy loads occasionally. I'd take a 1/2 ton deisel in a heartbeat (wait, make it a Ford ;) )

That describes me perfectly, and it's part of the reason why I own a pickup. The resale piece, better fuel mileage, etc., will all figure into my decision on my next truck.

builder good points and im an advicate of owning what you need and you defiantly need diesel power and torque.
ya ive got one of those 1/2 tons with every possible option and love it but thats just how i am. why wish you had something later. i do have 2 kids and we use my truck for just about every family outing to home depot, lol. really though every time we go somewhere we are in the truck.
i based my numbers for the c4500 off of a couple my brother was selling for 28k, they were 06 models and did not have many acessories beside the d-max. they were end of the year deals but still they were only about 5k to 8k off of sticker.
i did some amazing stuff when i had the little bx 23 to dig deeper i dug a ramp down to load higher i built a ramp up but it was slow for me and didnt have the power i needed to move larger rocks and dig bigger stumps. i know you had alot of issues with your past tractor and i solved mine by moving up to a b3030 just like you solved yours with the case.

what i dont like to see is someone like my neighbor who ones a 3/4 ton d-max and i have never seen him pull anything but then again he also owns a zd326 to mow 1 acre. some people just like spending money on things they want.

workin,

I know what you mean. We got dozens of chicks running around in crewcab dually diesel 4x4's and never carry much more than their lipstick and lattes around in them. Kinda funny-you look in the bed in back and there's nothing but shiny paint.

Seriously-You oughta find yourself one of the few remaining '07 "dirty diesels" (no DPF) before they'e all gone. It'd make more sense for your business, you'll increase fuel savings, plus you'll get a nice payback when you trade it in.

NOW is the time to buy, there's very few '07's left, but they're really nice without the DPF.

Think about it. It makes so much sense for you to be driving a diesel....especially an '07.

i want one, i need one, but right now i cant buy one. :( In a week or so im going back to full time dealership work, so maybe i will be able to get a better insider deal. last time i checked there was 4k off that truck and 0%

Trucks are a tool/necessity, just like a tractor. I have a 2006 chevy 1500hd with the 6.0 engine and towing package. I went with the 4x2, because even living in NY(southern) I only use 4x4 maybe once a year. I traded the 4x4 value for crew cab comfort. It hauls great and it's almost always full of something. Mind you, this is my weekend vehicle. I commute with a smaller car. My wife has a soccer mom car. The extra passenger space is a big bonus. I'll sit and wait to see how this deisel works out. I also agree with the poster as faw as deisel resale. You get most of your initial investment back on trade or sale

They will be produced at the Tonawanda Engine plant. If the design is well engineered I know the assembly will be top shelf, as Tonawanda has won many quality awards. That plant has come a looooooong way in the last 10 years.

I wish that I could get a V6 diesel in a 1/2-ton that only produced 200-hp. and 350 ft./lbs. of torque. I want the fuel mileage. It looks like the hot-rodders will win out, however.

I agree--at least to a point.
I'd like a inline 4 cyl diesel (3 or 3.5 liter) for a 1/2 ton that produced 300-350ft/lb of torque.

I used to have 93' Dodge 3/4 ton that only produced 160 hp and a measly 400 ft/lb or torque-that would do anything I asked. Apparently that just won't cut it anymore even for a 1/2 ton. BTW- that' what the 5.9 Liter Cummins was rated for in 1993.

it will be interesting to know what kind of mpg the new diesel engines are getting with the dpf and low sulfer.
another thing to consider is the epa standards have changed alot in the past 20 years which is why we see the fall of so many engine that finally got all the kinks worked out.

one of the best car engines gm has made in the past 10 years is the 3800, but we will see it going away real soon because its not epa compliant after x date.

by the time this thing hits the road gm will have the fuel system kinks worked out due to the current d-max, the d-max engine is a solid power plant thats good for 100's of 1000's of miles.

like bob lutz said " no we are not going to discount the dmax, the only reason not to own a gm is you cant aford it" :D

From what I hear & read the fuel mileage is lower than the previous dirty diesels, like mine. The DPF adds weight to the truck and actually uses fuel to complete the regen process, so it would stand to reason that there would be a fuel economy penalty. I think it also makes the engine run hotter and it increases backpressure, reducing efficiency even further.

WASHINGTON (AP): The Senate voted today to increase fuel economy standards to 35 miles per gallon for cars and SUVs, the first significant boost demanded of automakers in nearly 20 years.

"It closes the SUV loophole," declared Democratic Sen. Dianne Feinstein, referring to current requirements that allow much less stringent fuel efficiency standards for SUVs and pickup trucks than for cars. "This is a victory for the American public."

The compromise removed a requirement that automakers would have had to meet an additional 4 percent increase per year for 10 years after 2020.

The measure tacked onto the energy bill would require a 35 mpg fleet average — including SUVs and pickup trucks — by 2020, and require that automakers make half of their vehicles capable of running on 85 percent ethanol fuel by 2015.

Democratic Rep. John Dingell a longtime protector of auto industry interests, said his House Energy and Commerce Committee will not address the matter until fall as part of global warming legislation.

Yeah, but at least now we'll be going further between fillups.:D

And it's funny that the Japanese, Chinese, Koreans, etc (foreign car makers), can get that kind of mileage without a govt. mandate, yet the U.S. car makers have to be made to do it. Seems like I heard something like that in Mr. Gore's movie a couple months back.

Riiiiiight. Now show me a japanese, Korean or Chinese truck that can do what a GM or Ford can do.

Honda has the highest epa standards of any car company. When they can build a truck that can do the same heavy work as a Ford Superduty or GM HD, then I'll buy what you're saying.

We all know that fuel standards set by the gov't are the average of the entire fleet of vehicles each car company builds, right? Look at Honda's lineup compared to say Ford's or GM's.

They simply build lighter, smaller size trucks (and cars), but they can't cut the mustard when it comes to real work. Well guess what? Americans like head room, leg room and back seat room because we're bigger than Asian people and we have bigger families.

Seems to reason that their cars would be more fuel efficient by default.

HA!!!!!

Ya know???????

........ like the stinkin' CHINESE are gonna build better friggin trucks than us? ;)

Seriously, GM & Ford have faults, but until a foreign truck comes out that's better and stays that way for 5-10 years, than I'll say we're still on TOP!

How typical of us these days--Solve everything with a new law. Don't ever let the market determine what size our vehicles should be or determine what the fleet mileage should be. Why not let the Japanese (and Korean, etc.) manufacturers build fuel efficient cars for those who want them...and let Ford, Dodge, and Chevy build trucks for those who need them? Why do we have to end up abolishing whole types of vehicles to satisfy some arbitrary requirement dreamed up by those who haven't owned or driven a car or truck in their adult life?

The only new law I would like to see passed is this one:
Congress shall enact no new legislation for a period of ten years or until the economy recovers from the effects of previous legislation, which ever occurs last.

I often wonder if the marketing wonks for Kia ever considered that KIA is an acronym for Killed In Action when they brought their cars to the USA.

In Japan, the 240Z and its successors are called the "Fairlady." That model name may work in Japan; but Datsun/Nissan knew it wouldn't fly with American sports car buyers.

It's a shame that Chrysler never took their super 2.7 liter I-5 common rail turbodiesel out of their Dodge Sprinter and put it in a pickup @ 30+ mpg, thing would have sold like hotcakes. :(

Even their new 2008 V-6 3.0 liter common rail VNT Turbodiesel would have been awesome in a pickup, but they only offer it in the Dodge Sprinters? :(

If you think that's great, you oughta see the diesels available in Austrailia, Mexico, S. America. lots of economical, peppy tubo charged 4 & 6 cylinder diesels that are easy on fuel and still 200/450-ish in power output.

I towed a two horse Featherlight trailer behind a 2006 Dodge Sprinter 2500 van with the 2.7 liter common rail I-5 engine with the five speed automatic transmission and it was superb, plenty of torque to get the job done.

Why they cannot put a pickup body on this 2500 or dually 3500 chassis is insane, even Winnebago takes the same chassis and puts a beautiful motorcoach on it with a GVW of 13,500 pounds, more than enough for any pickup!!!! :( :( :(
