Re: Big Barn痴 Retirement Farm Shop

Gale, your mill really seems to match my 8" x 28". If your table is ~6" x 26", see the manual for Grizzly G0729. If your table is ~8" x 28" see the Grizzly G0731 manual for specs and parts and see if they match up like they did for me. My 12" x 36" lathe is HFT, came with HFT & Enco manuals. I buy G0731 parts and bolt 'em on. (F/R switch and a motor contactor/relay last year)

Our mini-'Bridgies' lack power Z (for boring) but are 'standardized' models that rock for cost and footprint, and haven't been changed much since the '80s. My power switch & related wiring is different than the G0731, but that & paint/Bondo is about all. Always brush chips, no compressed air that blows grit into wrong places. ;) jon

Good advice! I was taught that a long time ago.

From what I was told and have read the table on the Select mill table is 9x30 but since it is an old import I am sure it was a copy of another brand or even a copy of a copy. Making a copy a bit wider and longer would be helpful in marketing. :) It is the knee gib reinstall that I am going to have to figure out. The seller verbally walked me through the process and all the parts seem to be in a zip lock bag but we did not see it coming apart.

I am certainly impressed by Big Barns shop and others showcased on this thread but I haven’t seen any wood working shops so far.
I spent the majority of my working career in the building/remodeling/wood fabrication business and although retired, looking for ideas to improve my shop layout, storage ideas, and material handling.
Why one might ask your retired? Simply because I love tools, wood, and the smell of sawdust.

Looking forward to some of you wood guys chiming in.

B. John. Thanks for the excellent suggestion. It is logical to assume that as in the general population there is MORE interest in woodworking than metal and the same would apply to TBN’ers.

I’ll start this off. Everyone welcome to contribute!

My woodworking skills are basic, but this is what I have set up. This long low ceiling building originally housed the wash/grade line for carrots and potatoes.

Larger projects usually have to be assembled in the main shop.

Re: Big Barn痴 Retirement Farm Shop

Nice cozy woodworking area with wood heat to boot.
My shop is currently 32 X 80 and as my carpentry business grew and I accumulated more gear the constant pressure of earning a living simply dictated plant a new machine where ever space allowed and get on with the task(s) at hand. Now that things are a bit more laid back i閾エe Got time to really think about work flow and fine tune matters such as central dust collection and hopefully a dedicated spray finishing area.
I have acquired a 7Hp dust collection cyclone and have planted the posts outside to support it with the intention of plumbing the super suck to. All the major dust producing stationary equipment. Due to the god offie cost of spiral pipe I want to be sure all my stuff is exactly where it needs to be.
While most guys my age are playing golf or watching daytime TV, I prefer to hang out in the shop and predictably catch he!! from the good spouse of 52 years for tracking dust into the house.
Life is good

Gale those are nice looking machines! And I’m happy for you that it came with a fair amount of tooling.

It will be nice if you can set them up in their own enclosed or semi-enclosed area.

Thanks. They will go in their own area on the back side of the two bay part of the shop at some point. Today I started oiling and cleaning up the 2 lathes. I think it has been many years since they were oiled or used but they are starting to come back to life step by step. This evening I went by to show my tractor mechanic some of the photos and we started digging through the boxes of stuff that was still in my car. He was blown away with the attachments and it must to have been like 100 cutting bits all total. I also oiled the 601 power hacksaw and it really looks like it has seen little usage or a had a quality rebuild. Got to run for now.

Feel free to post pics of your lathe(s) cleanups Gale.

Here’s a pic of my wood burning stove in the wood shop area. Not that we have extremely cold winters but it sure is nice.

Material storage. Pretty tough to keep tidy.
