Thanks, Xfaxman. Not certain what happened there. Hopefully it’s okay now.

The area Terry claims is hard to keep tidy is tidier (sp) than my working areas...…..

If I didn't know better I'd say he never works in his shops. But rather I know it's just a reflection of how organized he is.

Yep, visible now .

Had it happen to me when posting pictures last week :confused3:.

Rebuilding older machines using the hand scraping method - YouTube

This covers new vs old machine tools and shows scrapping and bondoing as has been mentioned. While in tool and die many years ago the stuff in this video was new to me before this thread that is so great about the ends and outs of machines we can buy for our home based machine shops both small and large. I now understand why some have stated a mint like 40 year old mill can be light years ahead of some of the new machines on the market quality wise.

While most of you have over the top talents compared to mine one of my areas of interest is marketing materials for old stuff be it tractors or machine shop tools. Below is the front and back of a post WW2 marketing brochure on our Jefferson Kelly power hacksaw.

Gale from about the age of ten until my forties I kept all the farm equipment and tool catalogs and brochures I could get my hands on.

Even when I was still living at home I had two drawers of a filing cabinet full of literature. Must have moved the collection left to right and around the block a dozen times over the years. Sadly it’s all gone now.

You might have to find yourself some scraping tools.

Big Barn if you still had the literature you could have sold it on eBay and bought you another machine. :) This 601 flyer was $5 and $5 for shipping.

On scraping tools I gave some thought to getting one or more but then a light bulb came on that they would NOT fit my hands. :)

Actually the lathes show no real usage and there was a few parts made many years ago for practice it seems in with the boat load of attachments and tools. The son thought they had rust on them but it was just a thick brown hard film. It melts easily with the Seafoam spray of cleaning the back side of the valves in gas engines with Direct Injection. I used some in the oil cups to make sure the felt pads were flowing OK than I started using a 50/50 mix of Walmart regular 10W-40 high mileage motor oil and Archoil AR9100. Yesterday my AR8300 grease came that I may use on the mill pedestal and lead screws initially and a bottle of AR4400 LP I am going to test as a Way Lube that may not attract dust. I am new to the AR8300 and AR4400 LP but using on our 5th gallon of AR9100 that we put in about everything we own.

Archoil - all4shooters

AR83 - Severe Duty Nanoceramic Grease - Archoil
This source is $20 less than I paid.

Reviews – Archoil

Gale, I'm not sure exactly where you're putting the grease on the mill but I would reccomend keeping it away from anywhere that's exposed. Grease is rarely used on surfaces of machining equipment as it holds chips and can accelerate wear.

If you're lubing the ways and leadscrews then I'd stick with a decent way oil.

I was that way with automotive magazines. Have a footlocker full of Hot Rod, Car Craft, JC Whitney magazines from the late 60s. Also have Bo Derek edition of Playboy. Not sure how that got in there...
