I suspect it was actually intentional so it could be easily removed for travel. Especially on the smaller rivet forges. But if you have no need to move it often, changing tools to suit your use and sense of what is right kind of goes straight to the core of blacksmithing. To my mind, at least...

I save the plastic stops used on adjustable back lawn chairs before they go in the dumpster.

With the use of a small wooden dowel or metal rod they can be used for dispensing rolled products.
Pic of mine used for masking paper. Electrical conduit used for axles.
