Black Smoke followed by sudden death?

I have been avoiding this post for a couple days, hoping to come back to good news. Hopefully the hammers are still locked in the toolbox.

Me too David.

I like to consider myself an armchair diesel tech, but all the good ideas have been done. What bothers me is the black smoke and no fire. And also, the no fire on ether. A diesel will run on ether, wether its getting fuel or not. We just recently went through fuel delivery problems on an ancient International TD15 that we replaced the engine in. We had two bad pumps (very old, each sat for a minimum of 15 years) and had timing issues (keyed pump, installed first 180 degrees out) and yet, even with no fuel reaching the injectors, the engine ran on ether.

Iplayfarmer - You mentioned adjusting the valves. Did you happen to crank it over while doing so, making sure that each is operating up and down freely? I know that might sound like a stupid question, but the reason I ask is that your symptoms almost sound like a worn lobe on a cam. I wish you the best of luck and patience.

I'm hoping he doesn't rent a jack hammer or a car crusher....

Any updates???
Well I started reading these quotes and like a good book or a John Wayne movie, I couldnt put it down and all the time I was expecting a end/answer. Then it all stopped, now Ive got to go to bed and wonder if that poor guy got that tractor started, or did he use the hammer LOL

At times I am expecting to hear the distant echo of frustrated scream fading off in the distance....

I'd much rather hear the raspy roar of an angry diesel!

I've been reading this, not wanting to say anything, hoping for results with the injectors or pump. No such luck, so here goes.... I've seen this same scenario a few times on large marine diesels. Try dropping the oil pan and looking for the pieces of a piston. Sounds like a cracked piston or liner to me.

Sorry to leave you all hanging. I've been laying low. It's dropped below zero regularly here for the past while, and even though I've got the tractor in the garage/shop, it's still not terribly comfortable working on a tractor at these temperatures.

I asked around again and looked all over the silly tractor for timing marks. Nothing on the rear flywheel. Nothing I can see on the front anywhere.

My plan is now to just take my time and do the trial and error approach... Take out a shim and try it, take out another shim and try it. I'm pretty sure I just need to get the timing right on this newer pump. From my tinkering with a bottle rocket stuck in the cylinder (it was the closest wood stick I could find that would fit in the injection port to test the height of the cylinder) I'm pretty sure that the timing is a little late if anything. I'd be all for looking for pieces of piston in the oil pan, but I have considerable compression in both cylinders.

Knowing that I am in for some repeated opening of the fuel system, I finally got a 1/4" fuel shutoff valve to put between the tank and the filter. At least that way I won't have to drain the whole tank everytime I take a shim out.

I also went and borrowed a snowblower from my dad that he was given by my younger brother to whom I gave it after it was given to me by my wife's brother who received it from his grandfather after his death. (Follow that?) I had loaned my dad my JD 140 lawn tractor that has a snowblower on it, and therefore, he didn't need the previously mentioned heirloom snowblower. I took the smaller one because I have less driveway than he does.

The point of the whole snowblower paragraph is that I should feel less pressure to get the tractor up and running. Hopefully I'll be less stressed now while working on it and I can simply relax and work my way through it.

The mechanic that was recommended to me by the guys who sold me the tractor has not called me back yet. I'm not going to chase him down and beg him to work on the tractor just yet. I'll keep doing what I can.
