Someone parting out a g174, dunno how similar it is to the g172 but in case you find you need any other parts etc. this may help.

Thanks! I called the guy and he deals a little in these bolens tractors. He says he can swap my core for an engine he rebuilds for $800. He was pretty helpful too. He's concurring with the advice I'm getting elsewhere too. The timing can't make that much of a difference. There must be some other problem.

The only problem is that he's 800 miles away. I love living in the middle of Idaho. It seems nothing is close. Usually that's a nice thing.

Well I talked my wife into coming out and helping me check the timing of the new pump against the timing of the old pump. I had the new one timed spot on with the old one.

I'm impressed with my ability to set the timing blindly on the drop in bosch pump, but that doesn't help me since the tractor still won't start.

I'm calling the New Holland dealer about 20 miles away tomorrow to have them take it and work on it. I've heard a hushed rumor that one of the mechanics there knows a few things about these grey market tractors.

I just dropped in on this thread, and was wondering if you have checked the compression. A holed piston might cause the problems you're seeing. If this suggestion has already been offered, my bad.

That's actually one of the reasons I've decided to take it in to a shop. I don't have a compression tester that will test a diesel. I just got off the phone with the guy at Tractor Sales and made an appointment to take it in tomorrow.

The challenge of learning how to work on it has morphed into the pressure of spring is just around the corner and I need it running to do my spring and summer work.

Pull the crank case breather.. if you have a holed piston.. you will get a decent amount of air movement at the breather... a 'hand check' should tell you..

I just got back from the Ford Dealer. I forgot the repair manual when I delivered the tractor, so I ran down today on my lunch break and dropped off the manual.

The shop foreman, Bob (I think all shop foremen have one syllable names), was there and he actually has some experience working on these smaller grey market style tractors.

Get this... He thinks that it won't start because it's under load due to a bad hydraulic pump or bad valve. I'd have never gotten to that. I'll fully believe it when I go and drive the thing up onto my trailer to bring it home, but I think this guy is going to be able to help me.

All the pain and anguish on the fuel pump, injectors, bleeding, etc and it may be the hydraulics? That's gotta be a slap out of left field!

At least hydraulics are normally cheaper to correct.

If you think the hyd pump is hyd locked.. disconnect the hard lines to it and see what ya get..

Might be a bad quik disconnect.. that plauges the chinese owners frequently with split pump housings.. etc..
