MJ beat me to it. But, I keep a pine board around. It's soft enough that it will dent when you smack it down on the air pipe and seal up good.

I've heard that the rag trick only results in the rag getting jambed into the air cleaner and it a bear to remove and is likely to not stop the engine either. Never used it, so that's just talk...

If there is concern about a run-away, I try and have the ducks lined up in advance. Board ready and air pipe identified and free of obstructions.

The rag thing is not a great idea. I've seen them sucked into an engine more then once. On carburated engines, it can be a disaster since it can wedge the butterfly open. Its sort of like the old hot rod days when a guy would use a screwdriver to wedge the choke open, then the engine would fire and the blade of the driver would drop down and wedge the throttle open.

Bad news update...

I called the guy who was going to try and test the pump. He told me that he can't get it on his stand to test it.

Looks like I'm back to shotgun diagnosis. Hook 'er up and test fire.

He also said that the advance on the new pump is different than the advance on the old pump. He's going to show me how to change that when I go to pick it up.

Any comments or suggestions about changing the advance?

How different? It is possible that the one that doesn't work is, er well, broke?

I agree that a small rag could get sucked in but I was thinking of something big enough not to get sucked in. Like John said have your ducks in a row when the possibility presents itself. Although, often these kinds of things happen when you are least prepared for them. I have used a rag--a big rag like a towel and it worked fine without additional complications.

As a sidelight--I had a diesel car a couple of years ago suddenly and unexpectedly go to full throttle when I was driving in heavy traffic. There were a few very tense moments before with brakes and clutch I got it off to the side and shut down. That problem was with the pump itself. But another problem that I have had is that the turbo seals developed a major leak and the engine ran on the oil from the crankcase. Lots of smoke.

Well when I to stop a few the intake was never the way to go unless you had the filter and hoses off, like I sort of ready for it. Block it off when it starts to run up and it'll collapse the filter, hoses, etc. then keep going. We went for the fuel lines. Most of the engines had a transfer pump so if you cracked a fuel line it would lose pressure and run out of fuel. Perhaps a bit messy but a little twist of a 19mm and you could run the other way!

Pumps aren't that hard to rebuild but I think they are something that really needs testing to make sure the proper pressure, fuel delivery, etc are correct.

Here's the latest project update...

I went ahead an put the new pump in just to see what happens. I bled the lines and tested both injectors. I'm getting a good spray out of each injector.

By the time I got the lines bled and the injectors tested, I'm to the point where the battery is pretty low. I've got it hooked up to a charger and the block heater is on. I'll try and start it in the morning.

Hopefully you won't be posting results this morning.....

You'll be busy catching up on all your tractor chores with a good running Ford ;)
