How about a restricted fuel return line?=
Increased pump pressure.

I've tried it a few times with the fuel return lines completely off = no better.

My friend at work is still tinkering. I asked him the other day if he was ready for me to come pick it up. His response was something like this...

"&^% no! I'm going to conquer that #*%$"

I can tell he's developed a particular fondness for the machine.

I think I share part of that with him, as I have developed a fondness for reading about it, anyway.

That's the kind of attitude that will probably eventually solve it. Don't be surprised to find that it is some issue caused by a 5 cent 'E' clip or something like that.. BTDT.. got the repair bill.

The day I bought a replacement for this tractor is the day that it became a casual amusement. Before that it was really starting to frustrate me. Now that I know I don't have to get it running I can sit back and enjoy the exercise of wondering what is wrong and giving the occasional suggestion.

I haven't read through all the posts on this topic, but from the initial symptoms and what has been replaced so far I would suggest looking for a sticking exhaust valve or something else wrong with the valve mech. The valve may not start sticking until the engine warms up, so you may not find it on a cold engine. I would have initial suspected a fuel injector problem, either a broken tip or a stuck nozzle valve.

Black smoke is evidence of fuel that is not completely burnt. If you have an exhaust valve that doesn't seat properly you may get enough compression to ignite the fuel and partially burn it or the fuel may be getting partially burnt when it mixes with the exhaust from the other cylinders in the exhaust manifold.

Just my 2 cents...

If I had an exhaust valve that didn't seat properly, would that show up in a valve clearance test? Would the improperly seated valve have more clearance than it should?

I like the new MF. It's nice to have something with power steering and a little more roomy operator station. The added weight and draft control really seem to make a difference in handling rear implements too. I still have to fix the PTO and 4X4 and add a loader.

The funny thing is that the Massey says right on the tag that it's made by Iseki & Co., Japan. I replaced the little Iseki with another Iseki.

It actually seemed like the old geared 17 hp had more power than this Hydro 19 hp.

i would replace the fuel filter again as water will swell the paper in the filter and not allow fuel through but as you say black smoke air intake is likely your problem at 25 degres you could have a wax problem in the fuel add polar power melt down and winter grade fuel something easy to try the bear
