The valve may not start sticking until the engine warms up, so you may not find it on a cold engine. I would have initial suspected a fuel injector problem, either a broken tip or a stuck nozzle valve.
Black smoke is evidence of fuel that is not completely burnt. If you have an exhaust valve that doesn't seat properly you may get enough compression to ignite the fuel and partially burn it or the fuel may be getting partially burnt when it mixes with the exhaust from the other cylinders in the exhaust manifold.
