Black Smoke followed by sudden death?

He's got all the symptoms of getting fuel.. IE.. black smoke.. I don't think this is a lack of fuel issue.. etc.

I haven't read the entire thread (18 pgs?) but black smoke is indicative of one or all the following:
1. Not enough air in the combustion mix.
2. Too much fuel.
3. Extreme overloading. (lugging)

The too much fuel part can be either in quanitity--or in the timing aspect. ie, it can be the correct amt, but not at the correct time--usually too soon, in deg BTDC. I'll return when I've read the all the posts.

I have just read this whole post and I have had this happen on My JD655. Bought it and it started hard but started blew blk smoke but started. Used it for several months and bought a back hoe attachment for it put in my heated garage in Vermont turned it off and put attachment on and no start blew blk smoke and not take off. Try filters and pumps pick up pump and had inj pump rebuilt still no start. same thing blk smoke, no take off, tried glow plugs, Had to have started rebuilt as I used it up trying to start it. Check blow by had some but have seen worse run. Got mad and tore the motor out and disassembled it. It had 2 pistons rings stuck all the way around and 1 piston half way had to pry rings out of ring grooves, they broke did a major on it and about 300.00 in parts and about 20 hrs later all back together and running like new. That would be white smoke...unburnt atomized diesel. It's somewhere in the previous gazillion posts! :D

Just finished reading all 19 pages of this epic and I'm really curious to see what the final word is on the repair. Hopefully the latest mechanic will give us some answers. Bob

Unfortunately, despite the renewed interest in this thread I don't have any new news.

The guy from work still has it, and about once a week he tells me one more new thing that he's tried that hasn't worked. I keep offering to come pick it up from him, but he keeps insisting that he'll get the *&^% thing running.

It sounds like this little tractor has become what he and his buddies do on friday nights along with a pack of beer and a bunch of old war stories. If he ever gets tired of it and I get it back, I plan to do just what Chris had done with his tractor... Tear it apart.

I just got my classic 650 Heritage Special motorcycle running this month after 8 years of tinkering. That has given me renewed hope that patience can pay off.
