Has anyone tried cutting the box part off of a box scraper to make a sort of ripper-chisel plow ? I was at my local farm store and they had a new-old stock box scraper with 6 shanks for $250.00 . It looks like it would go about 8-10 inches deep.

If you cut the box part off I wonder how strong it would be.

You would no longer have the angled braces from the oplink connection down to the blade. All you would have is the main beam and the rippers. With the blade and sideplates on it kinda makes it like a truss system and adds strength to the entire unit. It might be easier to bend/break if you remobe the sides/blade??? I don't know for sure, but just figured I'd throw that out there.

For $250, I would buy a used 8 or 10 ft chisel plow and use that or cut it to size that the tractor can pull.

Either of these would do the job. Used Blue Spring loaded 9 shank ripper $395, New Orange 9 shank ripper $995 with shearpin protection and Used 5 shank chisel plow with spring tines $695. You need spring loaded or shearpin protected shanks to make these things work correctly. Ken Sweet

I Have looked for a used 3 pt. chisel plow for a month , there is nothing in my area I can find.
I was just going to cut the bottom 6 inches off the box scraper to preserve the strength of the unit.

How deep are you wanting to go with it.

Because if you lower the rippers all the way, and shorten your toplink the most you can, you can get the rippers a good ways in the ground without the blade touching. Maybe 5-6" or so. If that will be enough for you, you could leave the blade intact and still be able to use it as a boxblade in the future.

If the ripper length isn't enough I'd try lenghtening the rippers with a welder before screwing up a good box blade with a torch. Being adjustable and with that tooth spacing, go over the ground at a 4 or 5 inch depth and then again at a deeper depth on the bias or 90° to the first pass.

It might also help us it you told us what exactally you were trying to accomplish.

I use my box blade to tear up new ground before tilling it. Takes strain of the tiller and is fun. Just put the rippers all the way down, angle it right and rip away. You'll find a lot of roots that way too. :) And hidden things like cinder blocks that would not be good to a tiller.

I will be using it in my deer hunting food plots. About 8 inches deep would be plenty.

If you can't find something local, Give me a zip code and I would be glad to figure a shipping quote for 1 of our products. Ken Sweet

It seems to me that it would work. just be judicious with what you cut away. I think you could get by with just cutting 3-4 inches off the side panels and removing the blades. I can tilt mine and get the rippers down maybe 3-4 inches at the most. Cutting the bottoms of the side panels off shoudl give you 3-4 more. You'd probably have to round off the front corners of the side panels too.

I did a search and looked at the date on the original message!

I need to dig a trench to lay a wire from the meter pole to my shop. I don't want to put the back hoe on the tractor. I'm thinking of using the center chisel on the box to dig the trench.
I don't want to mess up the box.

Any one ever extended/made a shank with cultivator plow that would fill the bill?

Not interested in code/rules/danger etc etc.

Those subsoilers like in JJ's last pic can be had at TSC for under $200. $149 if I remember correctly.
And if you have access to a welder and some scrap steel, they arent that hard to make either.

That's what I was thinking; a longer bar the same sizes as one of the scarifiers and make a point (optional)on it and blow a hole through the flat side for the pin. If I had a TSC in AZ I wouldn't have to make my own; but what the heck that's half the fun.

Thanks for the help!!
