Gary,
Unfortunately, "deterence" only works if you are correct in whom you apply it to, and often not even then, as it also generates more anger amongst the friends/relatives/co-religionists of those "detered". I don't think we were right in this instance. You do. I respect your opinion, though I think you are incorrect on this one. I hope the song you refer to doesn't bunch all Arabs together; that's one of the ways we have managed, in my opinion, to screw up the middle east. It's also worth remembering that Arab does not equate in a one-to-one way with muslim. Speaking of songs, I recently listened to some country singer asking all who are against the war in Iraq to "remeber how you felt on 9/11". Even Bush has backed off on his claim that ****** was connected to 9/11. I like the quote from someone...."Invading Iraq in response to 9/11 makes as much sense as invading Mexico because of Pearl Harbour."
On the other hand, getting back to the draft question, I don't know where I stand there. I don't like the idea of compulsory military service, and I do think part of the American ideal is self determination, and that tends to conflict in my mind. I doubt universal compulsory military service would fly here. Maybe I'm wrong. I do agree that it might tend to make our leaders think a bit longer about going to war if their family members were affected. As it is now, one man can take this nation to war. He can be right. He can be wrong. Our children get to pay the price.
