Thanks Jeff. And if any new englanders have experience with the bolt-on spade, curious to hear it. My house has 230 years of history of pulling rocks out of the soil and piles/walls to prove it, and yet mother earth seems to keep spawning new rocks to fill the void.

I dig in rocks all the time with my home made "spade" on my bucket. Your rocks cannot be any worse than what we have here. As long as it is not bed rock (we have plenty of that at the surface too) I can dig out most of the rocks. It just requires a "feel" and some practice to dig "smarter" not "harder". In other words, don't tear things up, but develop a feel thru the stick. This comes with practice.

I like my fork mounted spade. Better visibility & reach. Never used a true bucket spade, only the forks one, so cant truly compare. But I think the forks are likely superior.

No rocks here, but the clay is hard enough to stop digging at times. No dam as ge to as anything.

I popped a fork off my palletforks.com frame on my old L3200. I was back dragging with downpressure trying to clear out a ditch. Bent the bottom of the fork frame. Bent it back into shape with a torch & a sledge. I got off lucky. Back dragging with downpressure on the normal bucket is how most people bend curl cylinders. Learn from others mistakes... backdragging with downpressure on the loader is bad & breaks thing. Loader in float & a gentile angle on the bucket is ok.

I like having a straight bucket.

Photo #1, snapped moments ago, of my Kubota L2296 heavy-duty, round-back bucket after 7-1/2 years of regular use. Photos #2, #3 Bucket Solution's bucket spade after nine years of regular, though intermittent, use; 7-1/2 years mounted on L2296 bucket.

Photo #4, a late thought, shows bucket spade bottom mount on my former Kubota B3300SU.
Note bucket lip on relatively light weight standard Kubota 'B' series bucket -- STRAIGHT. Operating bucket spade on light B3300SU did require operator prudence.

Yeah I heard all that "you will bend your bucket!" stuff when I built my little spade contraption. How would they know? They haven't built or bought one and used it have they? No they are just "fearful" that it will tear up your bucket. "well any dang fool can see that will tear up and bend your bucket". Yeah. Well I am not a dang fool. Would it be possible to tear stuff up? Sure, if you are an idiot. Don't be an idiot. Maybe they are basing their recommendations on their own mental acuity. :)

It is helpful to everyone if you include your general location in your profile.

I thought of doing it that way but was concerned about not enough lift and damaging the bucket. Here is my solution. 20200513_164106.jpeg20200510_115908.jpeg20200510_115859.jpeg

By pulling 2 pins on the right and left of the spade I can lift the spade off and use the base for another purpose. Takes about 10 seconds to lift out a small tree and about the same to plant it.
