Interesting, trihounds. I might try that on a piece of scrap. It would be cheap enough to try. Wonder how it would hold up or would it damage the wood (doubtful)? Would still have to protect the boards somehow, one would think. Do you have any references or just remember hearing of it somewhere.

Marcus, I haven't looked it up online or done any more research on it, but was told this last week from my local wood specialty store. I bought my rough cut pine from them today. I trust their counsel given the type of store they are, however, I myself would like to do a test board before doing the whole barn and I'll probably do that tomorrow. We should compare notes!

Regarding aging wood with steel wool and vinegar, I believe that there is also tea involved! Brew it very strong and use it somehow.

So, I just did some Googling and found the process does really work. The vinegar reacts with the steel wool to form iron acetate and hydrogen gas. When you paint it on it reacts with the tannins in the wood to act like a stain. I would want the barn to be more of a weathered gray than stained dark, though. The acid in the vinegar also oxidizes the wood faster than it would naturally, which contributes to the weathered appearance. It looks like some experimentation in is order.

Re: Building an "old fashioned appearance" new barn

Years ago , ( mid '80's ) , I rented a small house from some people that had a old barn , solid , but was old and looked it . What they had done , with approval of county , permits , electrical , etc.. was build a House inside it . First they had the barn structure on inside remodeled to accept the house , then basically built the house inside . The roof of the barn was the first protection against weather , metal roofing , then they had a semi flat roof for the home inside with 3 tab for roofing to provide back-up protection . 2" x 6" walls , 2" x 8" floor joists , Double pane sliding door , ( seems like that was when double pane was becoming popular ) . From the Driveway , looking towards the barn , some 50' or 60' feet away , The only thing that gave a hint that something was inside the old barn was the new deck in front of the sliding glass doors . Reading this thread brought back memories of that old place .

Any way , Cool project . Makes me want to tear down my old shop and rebuild it .

FredH, you live only a few miles from me. If you ever want to come up and see the project, feel free. Thanks for the interesting anecdote about the barn house.

Here's how the barn stands today: I almost finished framing the north wall in the loft area. Yesterday, I bought some salvaged antique windows with divided lights. I'll use 2 of them for casement windows in the opening in the wall. (Sorry, didn't think to take a pic of them yet.) Before anyone complains about the lack of a header of the window framing -- 2x6 girts have to go on the outside of the framing before the vertical siding planks, so I'll just use a girts above the window that will act as a header.
