Darren, I've been following your barn build, too. It's very nice.

The way you did your roof is also quite acceptable from my research, and I almost did the same. You'll find out over the next few months whether you get too much condensation. You can always add some insulation against the metal between the trusses if necessary.

Couple more pics from past few days. Almost done with vertical siding around first 10 ft height. Still deciding exactly what to do about windows or doors in the gable ends. My wife wants a nice old window (about 4'x4' ?) on the north wall in the loft area (above the man-door). We can get old salvage windows from a recycling place (Morrows in Medford, OR). (The guy goes through 100 year old houses before they get torn down and salvages what he can -- quite an interesting "store.") And, I'm thinking about a "hay-door" above the front sliding door, instead of solid siding at that height. Any opinions?

Oh, we're also deciding whether to paint it with a dark barn red paint, or stain it, or just leave it natural and protect it with something like shingle oil. I'm probably just going to douse it with single oil and let it weather. The only problem is termites in the pine boards. They have been stickered for the whole summer but I noticed termites in them before my wife and I stickered them, and some boards still have live ones. It makes for interesting old-appearing siding, but I don't want them to continue to live. We have some "Penetreat" (borate) left over from our log house. I could spray it with that first before oiling. What do you guys think? Or is the oil enough? Thanks.

Opinion on your last two posts.
The hay door will really look good onyour barn. I am doing it on ours just for looks. ( non functional )
Also reccomend using the penetreat or Tim-Bor before you stain. Just as with a log home.

Thanks linanddave and Bill. That little bit of roof is still unfinished because they ran out of metal and needed to order more. It was supposed to be here by Mon or Tues, but that was several days ago and they haven't been back. They haven't given me a bill yet so I'm sure they be back sooner or later.

I haven't tried this yet, but was told to let steel wool sit in vinegar overnight then "paint" the tainted vinegar onto the boards and it will "prematurely" turn the boards an even, weathered grey. I don't know to what extent it protects (or not) the wood, but was aiming for an "old look" for my pole barn as well.
